What oil filter are you using on OPE, boats, snowblower generator etc?

Good day folks. This had me curious. If I had these things I’d run OG ULTRA or Donaldson or Carquest premium or microgram select or Prime Guard.

I go through a bunch of OPE oil filters every year. Typically I use what I think is decent enough that I can get on sale. Fram, Champ, SuperTech. Lately I've been using some Kawasaki OEM filters which are made by Champ and have good construction. I don't have a Carquest nearby, and Donaldson seems a bit pricey though they are good filters. Most of these OPE machines are serviced yearly, or every 100 hours, so the filters I use are more than adequate, and priced better than the OPE branded ones. The Kohler and Briggs filters especially if purchased at a brick and mortar store are not cost effective.

I'm bummed the ST blue can is discontinued because they were perfect for this application.

Right now, I have an Amsoil EA15K53 on a 2018 Cub Cadet LT46 with a 23-horse Kohler engine. In the past season, I used a Purolator Boss PBL10241 I got from a friend when he sold his 2018 Taurus. I have another EA15K53 for a future season along with a VP Racing VP2835 and two of the newer model Napa Golds 1348 built by Premium Guard. So I'm set for a few seasons with what people generally consider to be top notch filters. If I ever do have an issue with the machine, I'm pretty confident it won't be oil or filter related.

Fram Tough Guard TG3614 on my Kohler powered Kubota zero turn mower. I had a Super tech ST4386 before the Tough Guard.

In my opinion, these engines are not picky. They will run forever with whatever filter you have that fits. The filters always come out looking brand new even after a few years of use.

Right now, a John Deere AM107423 that came with the oil filter adapter kit I got off eBay. It's an older one that is US made and looks Champ-built like the ST4967. I looked at newer ones at the dealer and they're now marked made in Brazil and nothing like the older filter. I'll likely go to the ST4967 next filter swap. Perhaps Kawasaki OEM if I can find them locally.

For our Kawasaki Powered Lawn Equipment we normally use Purolator Tech TL14476 and TL14477 (prefer to use the longer can TL14477 if it will fit) . Been using them since (iirc) 22 years ago when we got our first Kawasaki 23 HP V-twin powered mower which now has over 700 hours with only oil/filter changes so far.

I like the Purolator Tech as they are a lower cost filter that still has steel internals. I worry about the plastic/nylon E-core internals softening with higher oil temperatures during summer heat with air cooled mowing equipment engines.

My understanding is the Purolator Tech filter line replaced the Purolator Classic Line which we used prior. Many times we can find them on Amazon for less than $3 per filter shipped to residential address.

The other filter I will use if I have an existing order for something at Rock Auto is the Champ-Luber Finer PH2840 as it is currently $1.85 each but have to pay shipping hence that is why I only buy them if I have another purchase to add too. It also has the steel internals to support the filter element.

I was looking at the TL14476 for my John Deere. They were $2.84 last week on scamazon, but shot up to $5.58 today. Camelcamelcamel shows this isn't the first time it's happened either, and it usually drops right back down to that below $3 price rather quickly.

I found the same sad price increase as you did from amazon for the Purolator Tech TL14476 this afternoon as you. We have a Toro Commercial 21 inch model 22177 rear drive wheel walk behind mower with the Kawasaki 179 cc single cylinder FJ180V-AS09 engine with the oil filter adaptor provision. It has to use the shorter TL14476 filter to avoid the fuel tank support leg. Son wanted to start using it for his house since his current mower is not very good.

I pulled out the mower and the filter was changed when I put it up for the last time ironically on 07 June 2018, so almost 7 years ago (I always write the date on the filter when I change oil/filter). Since it was so long I wanted to change oil/filter before taking to him. I looked on amazon and was not going to pay that high price. I found a cross referance Fram PH4967 Extra Guard in stock at Walmart for $4.14 plus tax so even though it has the plastic/nylon E-core i brought it home and change oil/filter.

That is one great engine. Filled with fresh fuel and turned the fuel shutoff on. 3 pulls to get fuel up to carb and go to full choke and it started and ran smooth as it always did. Subsequent starts are on first easy pull. Greased the zerks and mowed my yard. Almost hate to take it to him now but my yard is over and acre and I have a 60 inch zero turn mower. I think we purchased the mower around 2001 and used it each season until 2018 when we stopped using it. So my son will be happy as he recalls mowing ours yard plus others for pocket money.

Does your John Deere walk behind have the same Kawasaki Engine? Not many walk behind mowers with oil filters provisions and if I remember correctly John Deere in the past made a high end walk behind that that used the same Kawasaki single cylinder engine that could have the filter adapter added.

Best regards

It's that mower. The Kawasaki FC150V was a splash lubrication engine except for John Deere applications where it is pressurized. Mine is the JX75 (or JE75 if it had electric start), it came with a block off plate over the ports in the side of the block for the oil filter adapter kit that the commercial JE or JX85 would have had (there's a relief cut between the ports that essentially bridge them when the block off plate is on, the filter kit has a new seal that fills that void so the filter actually works). That mower would also have steel wheels, and further steel reinforcements on the height adjusters. There's also the older 14 series predating the JX. Until it was recently discontinued, you could buy the oil filter adapter kit at a J-D dealer, I had to wait for one to show up on eBay.

Also at Walmart, in lieu of that Fram is the SuperTech ST4967, which seems well received here. I just wish they were painted black for my application.
