Why do you say that? Many of these Saturn's run 250k miles easily. All they need is for owner's to keep an eye on their engine oil level.

Are you pulling this from the air? Many cars burn oil and run for many miles, especially Saturn SL series that had a factory design flaw.

Have fun using used oil in your car. What else do you re-use?

My Metro was burning a quart every 300-500 miles for quite a while. I set my OCI at about 6000-7000 miles. I did change the oil too since it was quite black despite the constant top-ups.

My 87 Toyota has 215 k as of today......change oil/filter every 5k.
Yes it does burn a little....I'm using Pennzoil High Mileage 10w40 in it now. It was raised on Pennzoil conventional.

Spartuss,If I owned a car that used a quart of oil every 1,000 miles it would be gone.I'am glad I do not have to depend on a car with 1/4 millions miles on it.

Saturn S series will go 250K plus and do use some oil at higher mileages. If you keep them tuned and the oil level filled, they run forever. There are members of a board I frequent that have 300K, 400K, and a guy that has 500K+ on his Saturn S. They are easy to work on and I consistently get 37 mpg city/42-45 highway.

Oh, and I am glad I depend on a vehicle that has high miles. 1. It is paid off 2. Insurance is next to nothing 3. That car payment that doesn't have to go the car simply goes into the bank.

Supertech is your friend. So are STP filters. My old 528e ran to 350 kmiles using a qt every 1200-1500 miles. It mostly leaked from a poorly designed headgasket. Until I discovered BITOG, I observed 3k OCIs. I have since extended that to 5k. Rigging a catch can for blowby was also something I considered as well, but never implemented.

Running a car to high miles has NOTHING to do with being poor...if you like a car, you will want to keep driving it.

If you take care of it, it can easily still be a 'nice' car at 250k miles.

That is not avery 'pleasant' thing to say or imply about anyone! (BB political correctness mode turned ON)

These cars burn oil because the rings sludge/coke up.

And it can get a lot worse... try 1 quart per tank of fuel.

I would stay with an aggressive change interval of 3 to 4k to keep further sludge from happening, to keep you from burning ungodly amounts of oil in the future.

If you time it right, you can change it when you're a quart low so you're saving money there.

Also go with the double size 3600 filter.

Thanks for the advice eljefino.

Do you guys think sludge will form despite the amount of new oil going into the engine? Wouldn't additives in the new oil prevent this sludge from forming?

Saturn Fan ,you obviously never drivin on the Capital Beltway in rush hour traffic.I bet the owners of some of the jalopies I see on the shoulder of the road ,probably were bragging the night before how they have 500,000 mile on their car.

harley45000-

What car do you drive? I travel on the Capital Beltway all the time and see all sorts of cars and trucks on the side of the road. There are people here from the west coast and drive in LA traffic all the time on older cars without a problem. Remember, that new cars and motorcycles leave people stranded all the time as well.

I'm asking this question again since no one has answered it.
