What new vehicle / engine is worth owning ?

That’s a lot of miles per year.
I used to do 32k/yr. If I get stuck with RTO then I might be doing that again--or worse, if I ever take a job out of state.

My stay at home wife has been doing 25k/yr ever since the kids were little. The miles rack up here with ease.

It’s probably a little too small for a lot of families but the new Honda Civics are still available with the port injected 2.0L engine and that has been proven to be quite reliable and long lasting. The CVT that comes with them also has a great reputation too.
And you can get that engine with a stick.

The Ford 2.7L Ecoboost and the 5.0L V8 in the F150's are both epic good. Both engines will provide trouble free service.
I am a fan of the Ford 5.0. Its the only one I personally consider. (I am sure the 2.7 is good too, but I am not familiar). I like non-turbos for their simplicity.

The GM 3.6 V6 gets a lot of hate on the internet, but my 2017 GMC Canyon has 135,000 trouble free miles. I bought it new and the only thing I have done to it is replace the spark plugs and the thermostat. I change the oil at about 15% left on the oil minder using whatever Dexos synthetic 5W-30 is on sale (though my last oil change I put Valvoline Restore and Protect in it.)
We took a 2012 to 200K miles on blends with zero engine issues. Went through two trannys though.

I was considering a Lexus IS350F, before they are discontinued. Port & DI injected, NA V6. Not very good mpg, but quite reliable. Problem, to me, they cost almost $50k, and the design is OLD. Old isn't exactly bad when it comes to reliability, though. Struggling to pull the trigger...
This is pretty much why my wife and I bought a new IS350 in 2023. She also liked the design. She originally wanted a black over black one, but they had an atomic silver one with the black/red interior and she fell in love with it because it reminded her of her Christian Louboutin shoes. I’m happy with it for the reasons you mentioned plus no auto start/stop and it has a CD player. The only downside for me is I’m 6’3” and I have to put the seat all the way down and back. Getting in/out isn’t so easy for me, but I manage. It’s fast, too! We both are very happy with the car.

Since there are still Dodge Challengers and Chrysler 300s new on dealer lots, I’d go for one of those. However, my wife has something against Chrysler products, so that only leaves the Lexus ES350 as the only new car that I’d consider to replace the 2003 Corolla I drive daily. I would say Camry if you could find any new 2024 models left. Spoiler alert: Saturday, we bought the Corolla’s replacement. It’s a used 2020 with 26K on it… more details to come once I take a few decent pictures of it.

Hopefully this is just your toy car. I have a Toytota GR86. Can't imagine having this as our only car.

I heard these chew through transmissions with quite an appetite. Any idea if that's true?
Haven’t heard that but the 6.6 L8T gas engine arrived in 2020 with a 6 speed auto, the 6L90 or perhaps an upgraded version of it. The same year, the Duramax got the “ Allison Clone” 10 speed. Now, in 2025, the 6.6 L8T engine gets the “ Allison Clone “ 10 speed. If the story is that the 6L90 couldn’t handle the torque maybe that’s true.

My 6L90 in my 6.0 3/4 ton has over 265,000 miles on it with no issues except a slightly delayed shift into reverse. I plan to do a pan drop this weekend to see what the wear materials look like.

Nice 86! The IS is her car. She works from home and only goes to the office (about an hour away) about once/month. We bought it in Sept., 2023 and it only has 6,000 miles on it. Winter traction not an issue in central Texas since everything shuts down and I have a 4WD Ram 1500 just in case. My daily was an ‘03 Corolla until two days ago. “New” vehicle details and pics coming soon.

The GR86 is unusable on snow covered roads. Glad you wife likes it!

The wife and I were discussing new vehicles the other day . We're not really in the market yet but we were just kicking around ideas . Presently she drives a Mazda CX-9 which has actually been a good car . It seems like all of the old faithful makes and models have issues these days . Is there anything out there that isn't a problem waiting to happen ? Other than the Nissan CV transmissions that everyone seems to hate , engines seem to be a huge issue these days . From reading BITOG , I don't have a lot of faith in any of them anymore . Is that just an over reaction on my part ?
buy used,
before GDI
cars are depreciating assets

Here is a chart organizing the data on the 6L90 and the Allison 10L90 transmissions. There might be a typo in the last line.
