What is "Performance Plus" oil and whatever happened to STP?

I was following this truck the other day and it made me realize I haven't thought about STP oil in quite some time. Did they just completely give up trying? I just did some quick research and it appears that STP has changed hands several times over the years and is currently owned by the Energizer company. What??

And what the hell is this "Performance Plus" oil? I guess if Richard Petty says he's "never poured a finer oil" I guess that means it must be at least as good as STP, no?

I think for now I'll just stick with the Mobil 1 for my family grocery getter. Just felt like throwing out a few random thoughts.

KPP can never decide if it’s coming or going into the market. They burned a lot of bridges by going around their EcoPower distributors and going directly to customers with the performance plus products. Kinda the cardinal rule and all, if you have distributors…

Right now, they’re more focused back on the distributor market and wholesaling base oils.

Teflon is bad for engines so that turned it into just another thick oil additive. I use it to coat prover balls when doing water draws so they slide better.
In the beginning and used as directed in a non sludged up engine it worked because the oils back then were not near as good as they are today. It clearly said to put it in and run it for a long time. If you did not do that it settled into the sludge and caused clogged filters. Used right by putting it a clean engine it picked up power at high RPM. If it had only been marketed to race engines it would have been OK. Those engines sometimes picked up 800rpm on a loaded dyno. We saw it over and over in big block race boats. You would pick up at least 500 RPM every time. That was 1-2 mph at top end and that is not easy to get in a boat running WOT. It went down in flames because it did work and that sparked the industry to find all the ways we that make engine oils slicker. PTFE and Slick 50 gets bashed but it should be relegated to the hall of fame for what it did do and how it spurred the whole oil industry into producing additives that work even better.
