Just removed the cheap STP S7317 oil filter off of my 2012 Armada. This was my first oil change after purchasing the vehicle. This would NOT be a filter I would ever use.

192k miles on the vehicle, unknown number of miles on the oil / filter. Unknown type of oil - guessing something cheap.

I did run Amsoil Engine Flush for 15 minutes before doing the change. Oil on the dipstick wasn’t too dark or dirty looking prior to the flush. Post flush I could see a lot of stuff in the oil. Filter seems to have also collected some gunk / dirt or carbon. Didn’t see anything that sparkled so that is good.

Yep, made by Champion Labs ... that's why it looks like a Fram construction because CL started making a lot of Fram filters after First Brands bought them both.

I had a feeling it was a Champ just because of these colors or just white that I have only seen Champ or their supplier mark on their gaskets here and there.. . they also put one or more color swipe marks on their media (usually green).

Yeah STP XL is a great filter.

@ClutchDisc - thanks for the photos.
The filter in post 1 isn't the STP XL version, but the basic Champion Labs version which is no longer made now that CL is out of business at least for awhile unless PGI gets them going again after their purchase. The CL version of the STP XL has the silver can as shown in the second photo in post 10.

It’s cheap cardboard end caps. From what I could tell there was just some dirty oil on it, consistent with the dirty oil in the rest of the filter.
Better than metal in some cases. It is easier to glue the filter paper to the fiberboard and have a robust bond, also the fibreboard has some flexibility to avoid pleat tearing at the junction if you get moisture or a Delta P spike in the winter.

But I understand; not a fan of fram in a champ can sam-i-am

It is like the fat girl/Moped analogy in that most would ride it, but you would not want to be caught by your friends on it.

Really nothing wrong with that filter and I give it a pass since you inherited it buying used with a unknown history.

The Champion Labs filter in post 1 looks to have a smooth leaf spring (which will seal well on the fiber end cap) and nice opened louvers ... too bad not all filters lately have shown those two good manufacturing quality aspects.
