What Is Harder On Flat Screen TV's ??

This brings up yet another question with these things. I've read that when they're "OFF", they're not really "OFF". And I've heard some say that you are better off plugging the power cord into either a switched outlet, or else one of those power strips you can switch off.

Thereby killing 100% of the power to the unit when you're not watching it. Supposedly these things are always is some type of "warm up mode", or some such. Even when they are off.

What purpose does this serve? And would it hurt or help longevity to kill 100% of the power to the set when you're not viewing it?

As to why its always got some phantom drain the answer to that is because the owner expects it to respond to the remote control.

Most TV station and post facilities leave equipment powered on but shut high end monitors off at the end of the days shift.
 
These newfangled plasma and LCD screens are far more reliable than the CRT which used to croak in 10 years or less.

CRTs get dimmer over time. I've noticed it in monitors and TVs that were under 10 years old. They used to sell "picture tube brighteners" which increased the filament voltage to compensate.
 
my definition and your definition may be completely different. A really good tv is one that is very easy to see from a reasonable seating distance. Has easy to use controls, clear and crisp screen, easy connections for add on stuff, smart capabilities, etc.

These are available in 60+ inch varieties at Costco. I stand by my statement.

Agree 100%, and that was what my statement was pointing out. You really don't understand what a "really good TV" is on the market today. You are ok with a walmart/costco black friday TV that is bright enough to see.

...and I will continue to stand by my statement that you have no idea what a good TV is.
 
My 65 inch 4k LED Sony only uses 271 watts which is pretty amazing. No other older TV technology comes close to those energy savings.

My older Panasonic Plasma used to use 700+ watts which is significant for sure also if you point a laser thermometer at the screen of a projection TV or old tube TV the screen will be much cooler because the heat is generated behind the screen in the electronics and projectors and are not part of the screen like an LED.

I love to learn, besides price what can I look for? When I go to Best Buy they all look about the same.

And the fluorescent backlights in older sets also have a limited life.

And speaking of fluorescent lights, the fluorescent UV light or the ballast for the UV disinfection on my septic system has failed after about 4 years of continual use. Septic service company is coming tomorrow to look at it.
 
Turning the backlight down also helps with how long the Tv lasts overall. We just picked up a new Hisense U8G a couple weeks ago. The first thing I did was find optimal picture settings and turn down the backlight!
 
I think its sort of a moot point with the cost of TV's.

10 years ago I bought a 40 inch Insignia TV from best buy open box for $179.

It had full time use at two little apartments, and part time use in a bedroom at our house.

Not the best picture but after 10 years still works, probably doesn't matter if i turned it on and off or left it running.

I know this is off topic but I’ve never heard of such a thing. Wouldn’t the UV light kill the bacteria?

That's the intention, the outflow to the drainfield (drip irrigation system) is already treated by an aerobic advanced treatment unit and needs to be sterilized by the UV light before it gets there.

Well some TVs I don't know it's like they want you to log back in because they forget or their memory gets depleted so that could maybe dissuade someone from doing that.

If you don't have a TV like that I would say that all you're losing is that light being on that says it's on standby or power.
 
Back in the 2K's my dad bought one of the first ever made flat screen TV's. It lasted until 2012. When it went out, he bought an LG. That lasted until 2020. The whole screen is black, but you can make out figures on it by looking at it from the side. He then bought a VIZIO. A row of lights went out and it has a black space across the screen about 10" high. Both of them are now in my closet waiting to be repaired.

That makes perfect sense. I hadn't thought of that. These new TV's have tons of internal "settings", and fewer and fewer external buttons. The newer they are, the more they seem to have.

I just purchased a pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones for my new Bluetooth ready Samsung TV. And it took a lot of searching through the "Setup Menu", to get all the settings just right, and "pair them" to the TV, so both the headphones AND the TV speakers would work simultaneously on different volume settings. I did it, but it was a royal PITA, believe me.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to go through that again. Or worse every time, by killing all the power to the set, just to save a few cents worth of electricity overnight. That puppy is staying ON!

It may or may not have some type of battery or capacitor memory backup. I don't know. But if it does, it might last for only for a couple of hours, not days on end.
 
Turn it off. Hours will be accrueing on the circuitry by leaving the panel on..

Would you leave your engine running knowing you will be starting it up in a couple hours? Same basic principle.
