What health supplements do you take?

It is interesting how many articles talk about people being low on Vitamin D especially in the winter months. My wife had extremely low Vitamin D when tested.
Yeah, I always thought a regular diet provided adequate amounts but I may have been wrong.

Vitamin D3 pill is supposed to help calcium absorb too, is it not

Isn't that partially what contributes to SAD (seaonal affective disorder)? I don't suffer from it - thankfully, I know people who do - but I've always wondered if that could be a reason.

My doctor gave me a list of supplements to take. She said stay off of corporate medicine as long as you can. my list of supplements is below. After each item is why I take it if applicable.

1 baby aspirin : stroke and blood clot protection, protects against a few cancers
1 aleve or 2 ibuprofen if needed for aches and pain. Probably average twice a week.
2 nature made fish oils which have 300mg DHA/EHA each : To get Omega 3's in my system
1 CoQ10 3 times a week : for heart health
1 2000 iu Vitamin D : for proactive respiratory protection
1 glass of water with fresh lemon squeezed in it ; Clears arteries. I buy a lot of Trader Joe's 29¢ lemons
1 senior multivitamin crushed for better absorption : for the Lutien and many trace minerals
1 calcium magnesium zinc combo : Magnesium makes many of the things above work better. Zinc to help protect against winter viruses
2 200mg Potassium Citrate in encapsulated powder form : So I get at least some in my system to help with nerve and cell development. Helps prevent cramps.
6 oz of 100% Montmorency Cherry Juice - help with sleep, aches and pains. contains lycopene for cancer prevention. Been drinking for 20+ years
6 oz of brand name orange juice with pulp : Vitamin C and fiber from the pulp

My last prescription from the doctors read : WALK 3 times a week even if for just for a few minutes.

- Bayer baby 81mg aspirin as need for stress

- 1/2 a GNC Mega Man multivitamin in the middle of lunch or dinner every other or 3rd day.

- Indian Food with a curry style sauce with Tumeric. I like Butter Chicken with basmati from Chef Bombay frozen foods

- Lots of water

_ Yogurt (now and then) when gut balance gets off. 2-5% milkfat FAGE brand over some chocolate ice cream makes a nice
american parfait, especially topped with shelled walnuts. p.s.: Don't tell Sheldon - he gets mad at the drop of a hat

- Plain unflavored ground psyllium fiber ( Metamucil like ) about 2 day regimen 1x per month to clean out the lower gut when
it stops working well.

I will say that without the: aspirin, psyllium fiber or yogurt I would not be alive. I have a generally bad diet.

I believe so, although I always just got sad and grumpy because it was cold out. 😆

I take 2000 mg of Vit C 4-6 times a week, every week of the year. I know that official medical research isn't clear that this helps, but I have to say that after doing this, I have not been so sick I had to take a sick day off work. Before taking this much, I would have to take a day off work occasionally. So it has helped keep me healthy.

Walking is great. My grandparents are 80 and 81 and they walk a decent amount. A friend who is a personal trainer said walking at a brisk pace is really all you need to do to burn calories and get your heart rate up, and that running is actually tougher on your joints. I personally hate running, I feel like it is a lot of work to really not get too far. I'd like to get back into mountain biking once it warms up a bit.

The evidence suggests that people who take multi-vitamins are less healthy than those who don't. This may however be a cause vs effect question. Do people who don't eat well try to make up for it by taking multi-vitamins? (Which wouldn't work.) Or do multi-vitamins give people a false sense of security leading them to not eat well? (It's possible). Or do multi-vitamins actually reduce peoples' health. (Which is possible, but seems unlikely).

To be on the safe side, unless you're pregnant, eat well and toss the multi-vitamins. If you are pregnant follow your doctors advice which will usually be to take iron with folic acid (which prevents neural tube defects in the fetus) or iron with a multivitamin (same reason).

What do I take?
  1. two Vitamin D3 1000 IU (routine, as most people are Vitamin D deficient)
  2. one 81 mg ASA (advice of a cardiologist to prevent stroke from periodic irregular heart beats)
  3. anti-hypertensives/anti-arrhythmics (advice of a cardiologist)

I order for calcium to be absorbed, it has to be taken with something acidic like orange juice. I do not know why calcium is even mentioned with antacids because they neutralize stomach acid and nothing gets absorbed.

My eating habits lack fruits and veggies so I use vitamins to make up the difference.
