IIRC Stabil is EDTA, an antioxidant. I remember reading about it in The Life Extension Handbook written in the 80's by Durk Pearson. The military used it for vehicle's in hot climates because of rapid fuel deterioration. Too bad I tossed it along with the dilution ratio's.
Actually I think Sta-Bil is BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene)... EDTA (Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid) is probably useful as an antioxidant, but is poorly soluble in organic solvents such as gasoline.
