As far as I can tell, classic cars fall into two categories. One is cars that symbolize things that the auto industry has lost over the years. That's why the swoopy, extravagant styles of the early 20th century, the crazy muscle cars and land yachts of the 60s, and the mental supercars of the 80s are considered classics today.

The other category is trend busters. I think that one doesn't need much explanation.

Among modern (or modern-ish) cars, I think the ones that are completely focused on driver involvement will be classics. Examples might be the BMW Z3, Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S, Mazda MX-5 and RX-8, and so on.

I'd also add the Subaru WRX, 2000-2005 BMW M3, and Nissan GT-R to the list as trend busters.

I'm sure there are plenty more, but those are what come to mind right away.

My real vote, is for the Celica All-Trac (1993 turbo awd)

The think the key is LOW production numbers -some cars like the vw Corrado were duds...but all of the sudden many people want them.

I don't think enough people even know the Celica All-Trac existed for it to really spike in value. Same with the AWD turbo mazda 323's.
I think clean Integra Type R's are going up in value. It's an iconic car for many guys now reaching high income levels.

I guess the Viper will be a classic too. I drove one of the 360 final edition '02 Viper GTS coupes and its a great looking car and can even be daily driven, with AC and a roof. I guess 20-30 years from now an 8L V10 will have its fans tired of electric cars or tiny turbo motors.

Any SRT vehicle is an instant classic. All have very low production numbers and high performance envelope.

My favorite is the SRT-6 Crossfire. I also obviously love the 300 for its completely unique look.

The Solstice, the 93-02 Firebird, and the Impala SS get my vote. So do the Z3 and the Marauder and possibly the E350 (not the van). The 04 to 08 Acura TL and all the Miatas work too. The "I had one of those 20 years ago and loved it!" factor can help make an old car into a classic car.

all of the cars mentioned were almost 'designed' to be collectible, which can almost guarantee they won't be. I laugh a little when I see some rich guy buys up and hoards all the production of some model and tucks them away in a garage. to me, those cars will be curiosities and nothing more.
the really collectible ones are the ones no one really appreciated when new (which is why so many $100K hemi mopars were found up on blocks behind double wide trailers)
