I would like to create this thread to explore Ingredients found in our HDEO Oils. Perhaps we can get a better understanding of what those ingredients mean & also the base oil translated to a "Group Oil" category. I've found the front page of Molakules post about base oils very interesting & thought we could use a thread to better understand our oils.

I'll start this thread using Product Data PDF's & the Safety Data Sheet of the oil to figure out how the ingredients translate to a Group. This is not perfect since we don't always have 100% documentation, since it's considered "trade secret" from the oil makers, but a good general consensus could be had I'm sure. We could learn more about the HDEO oils we all buy & "What Base Oil is Inside the Bottle".

Here I purchased the Mobil Delvac Extreme 15w-40 Synthetic Diesel Engine Oil & appears to potentially have a Group III as the base oil along with zinc?

It's probably not a trade secret if it doesn't say that it is. What you're seeing is that an SDS only requires hazardous materials to be listed.

This will be a fundamental problem here, as you probably know an SDS is not a recipe nor a complete ingredient list since that is not the intent of the document.

It states in the PDF that it's "Trade Secret" & they don't post accurate percentages. This is fact & they will only release actual to healthcare, employees, & designated representatives.

I’d say that in this example it’s denoted as “CONFIDENTIAL” as you see for one component. They only omit the CAS number but you still have to report the hazard. When I wrote SDS for a living (then MSDS) that’s also what we had to do. Those percentages and their bands are related to how they affect the hazardous nature of the substance.
