What are you working on today?

Replaced the power steering fluid reservoir hoses on the 02 Xterra. They've been weeping for years and finally started to drip. Someone in the past replaced the factory spring hose clamps with common hose clamps to stop the weeping, guess it kinda worked. Tried to not make a mess in the engine bay and failed.

Drove the 02 Wrangler to ACE this morning, came out and there was about 1/2 a teaspoon of antifreeze under the front of the engine. Usually means one thing right? After the Xterra took a look and it's been seeping a bit out of the thermostat housing so gave the bolts a little snug up, the bottom one wasn't loose but wasn't as tight as it should have been. My bad, replaced thermostat 2 years ago.

Water pump on the Ford 500 today. I am certain it was original I don't know how it was water pumping. LOL. Impeller was rubbing on the housing and tons of play. I'm guessing since it is cam driven it kept it centered. Worst I have personally ever seen. Thing still runs like a top and it took only about an hour.View attachment 261679

Cam driven? That’s wild - did it have some no-man’s-land or DMZ to gap between water and oil in case the seal started to leak / cross contamination?

It is sealed both sides. The original had a bolt that ran into the cam. The updated one was keyed to fit into a grove in the cam. No bolt required.

Thank you for allowing me to rant again. On these early ones I'm pretty sure Team Duratec ‐‐ who was of course comprised of engineers or apprentices from Team TTB and later Team TFI -- literally forgot to include a water pump in the FEAD. As a last minute revision they said, "Hey, let's just run the cam out the rear and use that shaft to power a divorced pump. We can act like we always meant to do it that way!!"

Now, I don't mind this V1.0 because while crude, it's simple and standalone.

Later Team Duratec 2.0 came along and figured they needed a more elegant solution for the transverse 3.5. They still couldn't find room in the FEAD but discovered they could counterbore a spot under the timing cover and tuck a thin pump in there, driven by the timing chain.

In order to maintain their high standards of TED -- that's Terrible Engineering Decisions, of course -- they figured it was a bonus that a failed water pump could be invisible to the eye but fill the crankcase with coolant. Truly, the original Team TTB would be proud.

The bottom line is that Ford + Duratec = "what about the water pump????"

This has been a brief fictional -- but I'm sure historically accurate nonetheless -- history of Ford Engineering. We know from results it's true.

So far I've put ~150 miles on my newly-acquired 68k-mile Copart 1995 Cadillac Seville

I've got an appointment at WM on Thursday to have 4 new Kumho KU27's installed, after that she should be 100% ready to cruise anywhere.
Those are great tires, you're going to love them!

Rear wheel speed sensor and exaust on an 05 RAM. Gotta love laying on the ground and trying to weld exhaust pipe with a stick welder.

Friday....

1997 Chevy Silverado 1500, 5.7L/4L60E with 180,000 on the clock. P0171, P0174, P0300....Lean bank 1 & 2 along with the accompanying misfires. Smoke test revealed cylinders #1 & #2 leaking at the gaskets.....So bad you could audibly hear the vacuum leak over the cooling fan!!

Far as I could tell....They're the original gaskets. I vacuumed around the manifold with my shop vac three times trying to remove as much sediment & debris as I could.
I wanted to pressure wash the engine first....But the gaskets were leaking so bad right at the top I didn't want to risk it.

Procrastinating the calipers on the old BMW and rear brakes and axle seals on the old Rover... Repaired the visor mirror hinges on the '99 911. I am OCD when it comes to the fleet in that absolutely everything must work properly, even a visor I rarely use. The visor lid is held up by these two very delicate springs and the plastic locating molding fails over time. Little epoxy putty, polyethylene sheet (to keep the putty from adhering to the clamps) and clamps as the springs are under a bit of compression at rest. Just as new and you cannot see the repairs when it's all back together.

Nice looking stove. I wish our neighborhood had gas service.
house came with all electric appliances and gas furnaces. i pulled gas lines to the kitchen and laundry room for the stove top and dryer. stubbed through the laundry room wall into the garage for a gas hot water heater too. it was easier as i was repiping at the same time so a bunch of sheetrock is cut out atm. i cannot stand resistive heating appliances. gas wins for me everytime always have hot water and heat as long as i can power my blower motors.

i also happen to work in the LNG segment so i like to feel like im helping😂

Installed a short shifter and replaced the swollen lug nuts on a 17 Focus ST.

I did not have a roll pin press tool in my collection so I resorted to hammering. Yeah, that was no fun.

So, kicked out JBL head unite for Kenwood DMX 1057XR with carplay, android etc.
Wife wants CarPlay bcs. road trips. Plus, display can be adjusted and pulled forward, so it is easier to reach. OE HU was really hard to reach. Even I, 6.2, had to lean forward.
Plus, I installed fire extinguisher. Long overdue.

Looks like that Tesla iPad 😷

Spent 15 minutes trying to figure out the coolant smell on the Dakota.. think I found it. Looks like have to remove the AC compressor to even see that hose.. great. None makes it to the ground so I’ll just add when low.

Hmm, I have roll pin punches but clearly a press tool is something I don't have thus must obtain....?

The infamous bypass hose? This is a 3.9 or 5.2 I ASSume?

Watch that timing cover, they LOVE to leak coolant on the L&R of the wp
