What are you working on today?

Two post holes. One took near two hours. Don't ask.

Built a rolling stand for my new table saw. Which I need to shim. I didn't even realize the metal stand part does not sit flat, plus one of my 2x6's is slightly twisted (wish I would have caught that) no biggie doh. Nice having a planer.

Work: comeback for trunk struts. New Toyota ones I installed Thursday went bad. New set we got in is also bad. Tried them from all the auto parts stores all bad. Must be a bad manufacturer run or something. Had a couple other techs look at it with me to make sure I wasn’t overlooking something or something else that is making it fall. Maybe the heaviness of the hatch is making it fall. It’s a 07 Sienna. Also diagnosed a seat noise in a 2021 Highlander. Have a new seat track on order.

Home: tried to install oxygen sensor in dads car in the pouring rain. Parts guy at work ordered wrong one. He gave me bank one sensor two I believe. I need bank one sensor one. Connector is different and cord is shorter so he is without a car till who knows when. They lost this sensor at work and it took them three days to find it. Now I have to order another one. Will be keeping this one as it’s bad too just the bank one sensor one went so bad it was causing a misfire.

De-pinned a ignition harness for harvesting of the coil plugs. Plugs on Kia Soul are fragile and subject to alot of heat. Kia would have liked to sell me an entire engine harness as the harness is not sold separately. Bought a similar but much too short harness (Hyundai) for less than $20. Got the plugs I needed and swapped them out. The de-pinning tool was fabricated from a wiper blade(thanks Youtube!)

Getting ready to diagnose an intermittent P0012 Camshaft 'A' Bank 1 intake timing over-retard on my Rav4. Came on a couple days ago (car was driving fine) and this was about 500 miles after an oil change. Reset the code using my Autel scanner and it hasn't come back on yet. This same code happened about maybe 6 months ago and same thing- car was driving fine, reset the code, then it came on again a couple days ago. And (I think) that I have to remove the intake to pull out the OCV solenoid, and if I have to do that, I may as well install a new one. First goofy issue with the Rav4.

Picked up this thing for $80 on market place.

Owner bought it new tried it a couple times but just simply preferred the lawn mower bagger so it sat in garage.

This was a simple full clean/detail, change the oil (20.5 oz VP Full Synthetic SAE30/10W30) cleaned/gapped spark plug, new air filter, tighten all bolts, lubricate mechanisms etc.

It is also a one pull start and runs fantastic. Blades are sharp suction is powerful, and it even chips really nicely.

Pulled a 5.7 Vortec out of a 1996 GMC Yukon 4wd today. Got it stripped and it's headed to the machine shop. It'll end up in a 1972 Chevy Nova. The donor truck has a bad transmission and bad rear end, blown heater core and a broken steering column. Tomorrow I'll be removing the seats and front doors for resale.

Replacing the rear shocks on my 08' Trailblazer, went with Monroe OESpectrum to replace what might have been the original OE shocks that are 15 years old with 180k mi on them. I know people hate Monroes but I'm not paying $180 for a set of Bilsteins, $70 for Monroe's with the lifetime warranty that I can easily take off and take back to AAP (they matched Amazon) is more up my alley.

I was working on the dual pulley jacksleve for the old mower today. Has a couple bearings that are a bit noisy compared to my parts one. No way to grease. They are much like the blade spindles with a hollow tube and a bearing on top and bottom.

They usually have a grease zerk. Doesn't mean the tube is full of grease though.

The old mower said 10 pumps or until you feel resistance. The new one says two pumps. I wonder if the spindles on the new mower are pre filled with grease? If not the two pumps a year will never get any grease to the bearings. I should drill and tap a zerk into the old jacksleve pully while it's all exposed..

Got the front doors and seats removed from the 96 Yukon. Went home at lunch, then drove out to the range for a quick shooting session. Came back home and mowed grass.

Spent the afternoon at the VW service department picking up a friend's Jetta from service

Grandma fumbled a potted plant in the Cadillac
It was light work, no reaction for the Milwaukee vacuum
I tried that miracle wheel cleaner from Maguires Ultimate wheel cleaner, it did the work removing iron on the Fusion rims from a seized caliper

A significant improvement for little to no effort
Maybe next time I'll use a brush 👍

Caught my neighbor outside with his 2020 Elantra outside, he just got it back from the dealer
Said engine failure referenced here

I was right, it needed an engine, only 42k miles
It seems a PA was filed, and a long block was installed
PXL_20230624_235408685.webp

He got a long block and a new intake manifold, which I very much prefer
And a new thermostat, not that I noticed anything wrong with the old one
But hey, it's on the house 🤷‍♂️
Fresh coolant and 5w30 oil is nice, despite the cap recommending 5w20
5w30 is probably better for these engines
We tested the Kia Boyz alarm update, and it works as designed, only they forgot to put the window stickers on 😳
PXL_20230624_235555579~2.webp

Then I looked in the cowl, and found the battery hold down not reinstalled 🙄
Put it in for him, sent him down the road
I recommended just for posterity, he go back and pay them for an OCI in about ~1000 miles to get rid of break in swarf
Just so this new engine has a change on file at the dealer, for future warranty purposes
I think they get $40 for an OCI, which is more than reasonable in this market
