What are you working on today?

Today I did a level-it-out mowing after changing the oil in the rider. Fired up the Worx weed wacker and charged the batteries afterward.

The second picture, shows a chain-driven shaft heading off to the right (towards the rear of the vehicle). Is that the oil pump drive?

you like the N20? I found it remarkably executed on that one test drive I took.

Yes, That shaft runs the oil pump & balance shafts. Pretty impressive for a little 4 cylinder!

Mowed grass and then washed the truck. Birds decided to bomb the front end last night. Also wanted to get rid of that nasty silicone base tire shine the dealer puts on it. Just my luck though, couple hours after washing it, despite only a 3% chance of rain...

So that's how it's gonna be...

Still not working on anything car related.. well I did measure the tire circumference on the Festiva to see if a 13 would fit in the spare tire location, verdict is it'll be close. Looked at the Escape to see if I could locate the rattle towards the front of the engine, hate to say might be the timing chain I checked all the pulleys and all were tight. Main job of the night sealed around the edges of the kitchen with spray foam, I hate that stuff. Started working on the wall around stairs.

Yesterday put the back cover on the cabinets and got the dishwasher properly mounted in place. Planning on getting bids for a countertop next week. Goal is to be done with the inside of this house by the end of this year. I'm tired of living in a constant construction zone!

Ya know....I never learn. It's my own fault. I'm an idiot apparently incapable of absorbing and storing new information.

We know from results this is true.

I know aftermarket radiators often fit poorly. I've experienced it before. And yet here I am trying to install a Murray CU13301 into a '14 GMC 2500 w 6.0

I triple verified the lower mounts are dropped into their respective holes and there is no adjustment- left side is slotted but right side is not. This is what the upper mounts look like before slipping in their rubber bushings.

The original rad was not like this coming out, so that pretty well rules out body damage

Got the cam and lifters installed in the 77 K10. Reinstalled the timing chain, timing cover, water pump, crank pulley and other associated pieces. Adjusted valves. Reinstalled intake and distributor. Got it running, timing set, and performed the break in procedure. I've put about fifty miles on it this evening. So far so good. Will check for lifter noise in the morning.

Finally replaced the ignition switch in the Lexus. Symptoms were intermittent 1) no crank, 2) symptoms like poor battery cable connection, 3) normal crank after multiple key cycles. This eventually got worse the past few weeks to where it refused to crank.

Lowered to column to get access to the switch that was located on the back of the lock mechanism. The M4 switch mounting screws were a PITA to remove (and reinstall). The screw threads were upset to provide locking. I replaced them with standard button head socket machine screws. They're not backing out. When I pulled the switch off, its guts fell out.

Successful repair.

More diagnosis in required. Drove around town yesterday, lots of start cycles and all appeared good. This morning, it's back to the same old.

Before investing in all the time/labor in removing the intake manifold to get to the starter, all other possibilities need to be eliminated.

In my experience, this is typical of Asian imports when they get old....chronic electrical issues.
The relay contacts look worse than I originally thought. I don't know how much wear is tolerable before starting becomes iffy.

All was good until a few days ago. Turning the key to start, all that happens now is click. Tried every morning since and it refuses to crank.

I suspect the solenoid contacts are worn. Rebuilt Denso starter and gaskets arrived yesterday. I started tearing down the engine this afternoon.

I'm having to work on the driveway; hopefully, the weather stays clear. The slight breeze this morning was cold (I waited until this afternoon for the temps to rise a bit). Froze my face off. Some would agree that I look better without a face.

Ok I grabbed the more expensive part # also branded as Murray) 8013301 and the fit is good. Not perfect, but good. View attachment 148824View attachment 148825

That last comment was out of pocket
I can agree with the first one tho 😀
Why not contact the proprietor of the piss poor performing part?
It's a Spectre Premium item
https://www.spectrapremium.com/en/contact#contact-form
The better one that fit was an Agility (APDI) brand item

Start using different parts

I wish getting decent parts wasn't such a struggle these days 😐

On the way to work my right signal in the rear blew. So I purchased the bulb at work and replaced it when I got home. I prefer to do my repairs at home.

Work was very slow today and the internet was down so that was no good. Luckily I ordered all my parts while the internet was still working. The parts guys love me cause I’m always carrying a $200-$300 parts tab and they are commission based. Tomorrow I have to price out about $1,000 worth of parts as my brother in law wants to overhaul the suspension on his minivan lol. I think the reason we have been so slow is because they keep raising our prices. Higher than any other dealership around. Today the raised the price of our lowest priced oil change from $69.99 to $79.99 the $69.99 just got raised about 3 weeks ago from $59.99. They said due to the limited production of oil the price will temporarily go up to $79.99. I don’t see why anyone would pay that. It’s insane. And add about $90 on top of that if they want air filters or anything. Today I finished up the Tacoma interior the one that was molded. Sent that out. Done a used car trade in 4Runner new hub, bearing and axle in the back right. Customer who traded it had already gotten the parts so they told me to use those to save the company some money so I did and I hated too because they were really cheap some off brand that I hadn’t heard of from some place online I think it was like SKP or something IIRC, which I looked on RockAuto and it might be their brand. I tried to get them to get different ones and they said nope if it’s in there use what’s provided. Even something from a parts store would of probably been an improvement over this stuff but oh well I have to do what I’m told. They aren’t warranting the car as it has too many miles so I guess that’s why. I still felt bad about putting the cheap stuff on there though. It even felt rankity jank as I call it lol. I just know the finished result was a lot less noisy than the intial test drive and diagnosis that I did. That thing was rumbling and popping like a mad man. I just hope the parts last for awhile. This was a 2018 with 101,000 on it.

Then in the afternoon after lunch two oil changes. One 2019 4Runner with the uncommon plain RWD base model package. Then a 2007 Lexus not sure the model as I don’t know any Lexus models right off.

O'Really's site shows a 15% price difference between the two - but the descriptions and warranty are the same. I wonder if the cheaper one is from a different vendor.

The funny part is, I’ve had luck with a Murray radiator as an 11th hour replacement on a Civic, and a Spectra Premium on a Chevy. To me, all the Chinesium radiators are almost the same.

Yeah around 2018 I put a radiator in an '04 Forester turbo. From O'Reilly and fit was horrible. I had to slot the upper holes in the plastic mounting tabs and there was BARELY enough meat. Ironically I stumbled upon a reviewer on Amazon for the same application and same issue. So, write it off to a "bad batch".

Two years ago a radiator from Autozone in an '01 Ranger. I think it was a Spectra because of the CU prefix, but maybe not. Fit was "meh it'll work" but not very good.

Last year I put a Koyorad in an '02 Impreza - fit was perfect.

And now this. I just don't learn. But as with everything people want their vehicles back quickly and Autozone/O'Reilly has it in stock.....
