What are you working on today?

Full day today:

2008 Prius, front wheel bearing. 160k+, MN car. Pulled the knuckle and proceeded to beat the thing for 20 minutes before she finally gave up. Cleaned up the knuckle, bolted in the new hub, and off she went.

Followed that by finishing up a steering rack in a Rogue. Started that yesterday: replaced all 4 corner pads and rotors and yanked the rack as prep. Reassembled today with new outer tie rods and an alignment.

Next came a '12 T&C: Front strut assemblies, trans cooler lines, LF axle, rear pads and rotors, and 4 hoops.

In between, I snuck in a starter on a 4.0 Wrangler, that was an easy one.

Not bad for an under-staffed Friday!
Man, that’s a lot. You got on it.

Painted the calipers with high temp caliper paint.
Very happy with the outcome a small touch really made a big difference in the appearance of the calipers, rotors and rims.

Had to replace numbers 1 and 2 coils on Acura in signature today with NGK coils. Out of nowhere and thank God I was only 2 blocks from home leaving a friends house. Pulling out from a stop sign --- sudden loss of power and jerking with check engine light flashing. Put it on the code reader and sure enough. Replaced, started and turned off the check engine light. Back to running like normal --- "fingers crossed!!!!"

Ps. I was always under the impression the coils went out one at a time -- not 2 at a shot????
133,369 miles on Acura as of today when coils went out.

Sick of working on the Kia so had a few yards of top soil delivered and I’m redoing and leveling out the yard 😂 View attachment 107369
I love this. Looks so serene!

Knocking the mortar off bricks so they can be resold. Today is 98°⚒️
you sir, have my respect. We were outside all day supporting a multi-family garage sale, to include the 100+ heat index after getting soaked in a 2-hour pop up storm. It is HOT out there. I’ve worn 6 changes of clothing in 2 days due to the heat.

the gaskets under my cab lights have rotted. Silicone II seemed to melt with them. Yesterday I masked off the roof (again) and applied a 2nd coat of tar-based silicone shingle caulk, very, very carefully. It was 8pm but I was slippery as a pig. I left sweat prints everywhere, BUT, the cab didn’t leak during this downpour this morning. Never thought I’d put any kind of tar on an automotive roof, but….

Scored the Short Block job on the Shelby GT-500, This is going to be a "Time & Materials" job, The owner tried to nail me down on a price but I was having none of that. Stating "Everything is there".......Yeah & pigs fly!!
This poor old car has been run to death & half disassembled by someone else.

Not the first time the engine's been out either because it has ARP head studs & what looks like aftermarket cams.

Not sure about the market on these, But he has intensions of making money on this? The paint is pretty bad & all 4 wheels have curb rash.

I know the guy pretty well & have built some cars for him in the past, Owns a large Towing Company & is used to getting his way or at least being told what he wants to hear. His money is good.....He just likes to wheel & deal....And be in control.

Do what I do with customers like that: write up a rough estimate, and add 20%. Present said estimate to the customer. When they inevitably complain, offer 10-15% off as a "courtesy". You're up 5-10%, and Mr. Entitled is happy.

Yesterday I changed the coolant in the inverter and the regular coolant system along with changing out the transmission fluid in my Honda hybrid Accord.

I look after the car needs of a friend’s son. My friend works overseas and his son is here. Costco refused to install the tires he ordered, saying all the lugnuts were swollen. We just worked on the car 3 months ago and at that time there were zero issues. So I had him confirm at home that his lug nut wrench didn’t fit any of the lugs, they didn’t. AZ lookup says they should be 21mm, and I was pretty sure we noted the car used 22mm when we worked on it. Buy new lugs, or buy new wrench? He picked up 20 Dorman lug nuts and we swapped them in 15 minutes. i was ok doing this, because if a store turns him away once for this, it will happen again, and he needs a working lug wrench solution. But really, costco couldn’t just pull out the socket that works?
To be fair to Costco, I have had to go up to another size to remove swollen lugnuts and ended up destroying the cap and then having to beat the swollen lugnut out of the socket. Sometimes you get lucky and then other times, swollen lugnuts turn something simple into a time consuming ordeal.
I’m sure they refused because they couldn’t replace them quickly without ordering them in the likely event that they cobbled them up. That, and by refusing, they avoid being accused of destroying the already defective lugnuts.
I replaced all of my vehicles lugnuts, lug-studs in the Chrysler’s case, with solid pieces to avoid this problem. Having to change a flat on the side of the road with swollen lugnuts is not ideal. 🍻

The 2014 Tacoma got new calipers, rotors, and pads today. Kind of a shame that the brakes I took off only had about 2,000 miles on them, but the drivers side caliper was messed up and was slightly sticking. So, in stop and go traffic that rotor would heat up and make all kinds of weird noises.

Drivers side was pretty strait forward. Even the caliper bolts came out ok. I mean, they should have as they were just replaced, but nobody uses the correct torque on those bolts.

I did have a slight battle with the passenger side caliper bolts, but Mr. Snap-On came in clutch!

Bled the brakes with a helper and took off in the country to bed in the pads. Really like the Element 3 Hybrid pads and rotors. Get a little bit of heat in them and they grab really nice. The Element 3 calipers were very well made and I had no installation issues.

Looking at it now the dealer I bought the truck from who put on the brakes really did a bad job. Didn't clean the mating surfaces and used very little if no lubricant. This is the drivers side.

I do plan on taking these apart, sandblasting them, and rebuilding them. Keep them sealed up in case I ever need them. Both the 2014 and 2021 take the same caliper.

Good work!!

But what is it with dealerships or mechanics not using a/s or cleaning any of the important surfaces…

Ran into the same thing with my car - Dealer replace brakes and rotors a couple years ago… and I had more then one sticking slider pin, not a touch of anti-seize to be found, rear rotors were missing the plugs the cover the adjustment mechanism for the parking brake, so that rusted solid also… they used the wrong rotor hold down screws… again with no a/s so all four of the front ones snapped… oh on top of needed a sledge to get all 4 rims off of the rotors because they welded themselves to the rotor - again no anti-seize on the face. 😔

Engine is just about ready to drop on the GT500, Got the new short block on a stand which I had to modify to reach the top 2 bellhousing bolt holes. The only engine stand I have that fits Ford Modular's has a Big Block Chevy on it.

The Ford Service manual has you pull the engine out the top, This car has Long Tube Headers which would need removed before the engine will come out the top.
Took one look at that mess & decided to drop the Engine & Trans out the bottom!

Engine looks good, Nice Forged Crank & the first OE crank I've seen with Heavy "Mallory" Metal used for balancing.

I see it has the problematic 3V Oil Pump, Going to try to talk the owner into a Melling M360HV & swap the factory Relief Spring in. I had trouble getting a M340HV standard pressure pump last time I did a 3V Timing job.

Monday I fixed the Nissan Versa. Used left front strut, new left outer tie rod end, used left front wheel. Started working on a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500. Plugs, 4 coils, 4 coil boots, coolant reservoir, heater hose, air filter and an oil change. Also pulled the blower motor to pull pieces of the busted to hell dash out of the hamster wheel. Finished it today. Supposed to be able to pick up the Yukon heads in the morning, guess I'll start putting it together tomorrow.
