What are you working on today?

Swapped out the new Textar front brake pads with TSB Lexus pads.
The squeal is horrible. $100 for the pads; $19 for a new air filter.
It will take a month to see if these pads fix the squeal.
The Textar pads (European made for Porsches, etc) were excellent at stopping.

Letting the trans warm up to 115-130°F before proceeding with ATF level check procedure. It does not have a dipstick instead it has a check plug. Warm up to temp then pull check plug to drain fluid to correct level. Added an X-Gauge custom gauge to my ScangaugeII to read ATF temps.

Before wrapping up for the day I cleaned the mounting surface and replaced the driver's side mirror on a 01 Toyota Tundra with a Depo aftermarket mirror.

Rear brakes on the 2002 F350 yesterday. Boy was the caliper pin grease chunky and sticky.

Maybe sneak in the front brakes today- but it is Mother's day so have to be crafty to get into the garage to do them.

citric acid flushed the Chevy. And now, the too-long radiator hose is trapping air. Time to get the right one, at least there’s now clean coolant in the cooling loop.

Got the brake hoses on the C20. Had a Trailblazer come in that needed two ignition coils and an oil change. Also got a 78 Volkswagen convertible that, much to the owners displeasure, needs a new gas tank. I drained all the turpentine out and pulled the tank out, and the inside looks like the bottom of a dirty creek bed. Tank was replaced 7 years ago and they never drove the car. My advice, which often goes unheeded, is if you have a machine with a metal gas tank that sits a lot, use fuel stabilizer and ethanol treatment. Dont let 10% ethanol gas just brew in the tank, you will replace the tank and sender, and likely will have to have the carburetor rebuilt.

Alternator in my Ranger died suddenly; replaced in an Advance Discount parking lot, only tool I had with me was a crescent wrench. Made it work. I got almost 20 years and 274,000 miles out of the original, I’m not complaining.

What really sucks is I got a dud and wasted half an hour installing it and taking it back off. Second alternator I asked them to bench test; it was dead out of the box as well. Third one works great so far.

Then drove the BMW up to the corner this evening... when I pulled into the garage a transmission warning lamp of some sort came on. Will pull the codes tomorrow. Not looking forward to it but may well be something simple.

Didnt do much today. Haven't heard from the Volkswagen owner. Tomorrow I might be swapping out a transmission in a Chevy pickup. If it's there in the morning I am.

More on the XR400:
New brake pads front & rear, put a ball of quick steel on the tip of the now-broken decompression lever, oil change, clean & re-oil the foam air filters.

Did pass and rotors on my 2016 Avalon...70,000 miles, looked original. And added rims😂

Helped my former employer replace a drivers side motor mount on a 72 C10 this morning. Nothing else the rest of the day, but I have an 05 Dakota coming in the morning for a water pump and window motor/regulator assembly.

Installed docking lights. These are pretty slick, surface mount LED's by Attwood. I like the look of the heat sinks without the trims, but not sure how they would take the weather. ...and no, the oil pressure gauge isn't a match, having the original rebuilt.

We have a ~1/8mi tree tunnel of a canal from our lagoon to the main lake...these will help.

Fun with the good old Chrysler 3.7’s

Another day another head replacement (dropped valve seats).

With these babies...doesn’t really matter how clean it is under the covers/how well you keep up with oil changes.

I'm installing a battery isolator and running some 2 gauge cable to charge my camper batteries with the alternator. If I have to make one more trip back to the parts or hardware store, I'm gonna...
"I'm gonna..." Understand that feeling today ...mine was after doing 10 or so blind, one handed, left handed (i'm a righty) zip ties securing a wire harness in a very awkward and tight spot full of rough fiberglass edges...time for us to have a drink or two:-)

Got the water pump and window regulator done on the Dakota. Customer also complained of a bumping noise in the rear. The two rear bed bolts were missing, and the bumper had been pushed up against the bed to where it couldn't be adjusted. I put a porta power between the spring shackle bracket and bumper bracket and pushed it out. Then I loosened all the bed bolts, slid the bed around, installed new bolts in the back holes and tightened all the bed bolts down.

Also serviced a couple of cars this afternoon and hauled a load of scrap.

On the Prius, fresh oil, filters, brake inspection and rotated one tire to the back so there’s a pair up front with similar tread depth. I’m due for tires in the fall so I didn’t bother with Costco doing the rotation. Yesterday, I steeped the #3 cylinder in BMW’s relabel of ACDelco X66P, a TEC made by Chevron. Looks like the piston soak is a success.

Valvoline products were used, MaxLife FS 5-30 for the engine, MaxLife ATF for the hybrid transaxle. Let’s hope things hold up. 🐝
