What are you working on today?

Changed the rear diff fluid in a 2009 Honda CRV. Put the Interior (carpet, trim, console, seats, etc.) back into a Jeep Patriot, and a Chrysler 200 that I gutted to clean Earlier in the week.
I also did a brake job, changed the oil, rotated the tires, changed the spark plugs, and lightly detailed a 2017 Chevy Equinox for an elderly Friend of ours. He has been battling cancer, and winning I should say, so I just did it all for him Since he already had the parts.

Yesterday...Jobs finished, $30 used CV axle into 2012 Kia Sedona was successful so far...this axle was bought for a spare over the winter, I wasn't going to fix it in the cold and got lucky it just clicked all winter. The used one installed easily as I disconnected the top at the strut and tie rod. The used axle doesn't seem to have have any issue and came from a van with ~130k, I was thinking about going new but with previous balancing issues on the 4Runner's replacements I thought used OEM could be a good bet...time will tell, but I realized part of the Sedona purchase was knowingly going to be used for practice, experience and education...

Here's the after, used the Hart cordless and the 1/2 inch impact was able to remove the lug nuts and axle nut for tool ability reference, I didn't know if it was truly capable. The hex impact with nylon brush was used to clean the seal area and spline area, I should have used a wire on that as assembly was difficult into the hub but rotating hub 1/2 turn did the trick and the gamble I take is rust likely will take it's toll before this axle goes bad.

This is the clicking axle and the Hart tools. The used axle looks the same except a little more rust as I found it removed and inside the van shell at the junkyard, same model year 2012 and I've luckily been able to salvage many parts from this van but the motor was gone.

Fried the switch for the garbage disposal. So new light switches and gfci outlets throughout the kitchen, also cleared the jam in the disposal.

The freezer on the refrigerator has been weak for about a month now. Just been using the deep freeze. Finally got a new fridge. Of course the ice maker wiring is different so tore the inside of the freezer apart to access wiring and modify as needed. Woke up this morning to everything cold, no water leaks and ice in the tray. I’m calling it a success.

Cleaned up around the house this morning. I checked out the 84 Cutlass and confirmed it has a bad left rear axle seal. It also needs rear brakes and wheel cylinders. I'll start working on it Monday.

Changed the oil, cabin filter and air filter in grandma’s car. Also checked all of the fluids, added washer fluid and checked everything underneath and tread depths and brake measurements. Also aired up the tires. Hasn’t had the oil changed in about 8,000 miles since 2019. She didn’t have the money I told her don’t worry about it your my grandma the $60 of supplies doesn’t matter to me as much as your car does. It’s the only car she has her and my aunt share it as they live together. She called me this morning asking if I could do it today since she got the money now. She gave me $100 to do it I told her don’t worry about it but she said you can’t do it for free. I was happy to see the Mobil1 got rid of her sludge issues it appears so that’s good. It’s a 2015 Kia Soul with 58,000 on the clock. Refilled with another 4.2 quarts of Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 Filter this time instead of Purolator.

Worked on the Project xB
Pulled my Camry in for further P0456 diagnosis

There's a handfull of cracked hoses like this, I'll have to order replacement
The dealer cap fixed it, for a week or so
I'm planning the big timing belt service very soon, but I saw a TikTok about how these MZ V6s have an aluminum bracket that can be very difficult to separate

Mines 17 NY winters old with 187k, and never been apart
So I thought I'd help it along

Luckily, a 3ft breaker bar got them out, without breaking
I soaked the locating pin with Kroil, I'll repeat that periodically
As long as the weighted crank bolt socket works, the job should go fairly easily
I'm stocking everything I need to touch, every special tool that could help, and soaking anything remotely troublesome in Kroil
So that hopefully it'll fall apart when the day comes
Also disabled the heated washer fluid, it's no longer needed
Planning for a 4 wheel brake job, the screech is getting louder

She gave you that $100 because she knows about Snap-On Tuesday and Thursday. She wants to buy a socket for you. 🤔😎
All kidding aside, good on you for taking care of the old folks. 👍

these MZ V6s have an aluminum bracket
Yes, Toyota 3.3 and probably the previous generation 3.0 have that same bracket with the long bolts, I ordered one off eBay but it didn't ship with the bolts so they refunded my cash and let me keep the bracket. I ended up reusing the old bolts and the one that seemed the worst did clean up and seem to tighten and hold good enough. Seems mine came loose but kept spinning and it was like someone previously use epoxy glue to hold it in there. I had to pry it up as I backed it out as I remember. I didn't have the dowel pin get stuck but now seem to remember that could be a problem too.

I think the bolt snaps off because it gets corroded in the aluminum bracket threads. Had that happen on a 96 Prism where the starter bolt into the bell housing broke off at the last less that 1/2 inch of threads, ended up drilling a slightly larger hole and using a bolt with nut to hold it, there was just no way I was able to drill out that last end bit and save the threads.

Now before doing that timing belt job again I'd order the part and have it available before disassembly. For anyone's future reference use Toyota 3.3 right motor mount bracket, or part# 12315-0A010, or Dorman 917-189, just search on eBay and get the listing that includes the 2 long bolts.

A friend wanted me to look at the brakes on his Explorer, so I knocked them out after a day to the slopes. I replaced the pads before but the Wagner-supplied hardware failed. Installed new Carson pad support clips, slide pins and boots. Lubed them up with Toyota rubber grease, flushed the brake system with Prestone MAX DOT 3 to address the copper corrosion.

And started to un-f*** one of parent’s cars. It’s also due for a 30K service, Uber miles. My offer with the Prius still stands, I’m more than happy to exchange my keys for a bus pass.

Volunteered with our quarterly oil change ministry - had a very small number of cars - 21. We usually get about 40. It’s for single moms, widows, a wives of deployed soldiers. These are usually pretty beat up vehicles. I now do headlight restoration, often the bitog way. If I can, I’ll just clean them and wax with mothers carnuba. the boxed kits are awful and cause more trouble than they fix. I track all of the vehicles I touch and the kits increase the need for re-work. Half of them I usually end up sanding, polishing with xxx fine steel wool, masking and painting with u-pol. Those hold up. Painted headlights on 3 cars yesterday, mothers wax on one, and tried clear vinyl on 2 others. It was a beautiful day for it. And they fed us … very well.

Also threw black paint on the new lower grill on the Lexus. It’ll get clear and go on sometime when I have time. Rotated it’s tires and changed the oil in my sons civic while he was in town. Wife’s crv needs it, but I ran out of 5-20. Ordered more on Amazon since it’s cheaper than AZ by like $8 for the jug.

TCM replacement & programming on a 2019 Silverado 5.3L/8L90E, Needed room for tomorrow's (Monday) appointments. Gravy work!

Opened up the old T93 Bosch Controller as these are known to have heat related issues where the jumper leads from the connecter too board distort & cause shorts. I can certainly see these micro aluminum wires distorting! I carefully took the cover off & didn't cause the distortion you see.

Yesterday I replaced the worn engine mounts on the Jeep, decided to upgrade to the Brown Dog motor mounts and brackets. I also started replacing the cracked exhaust manifold with the improved flexjoint version but of course the gasket I got was damaged in shipping. Waiting on a replacement gasket to finish it up.

I did front brakes on a 2014 Nissan Sentra, and changed the oil. By far, the easiest car I've ever worked on in those regards.
I once again would like to applaud and recommend the "Silent Stop" brand from your local Federated Auto Parts dealer. I've used them many times and every single time, they are amazing.

(Guilty pleasure: I finally bought a jar of Permatex brake caliper lube, with the brush. No more messy fingers!)

1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
Rear brake shoes, wheel cylinders and axle seals. Had to replace the passenger side brake line between the brake hose and wheel cylinder, as the nut was damaged and I had to cut the line to remove it. Everything is back together and the rear differential is refilled. Brakes are bled. I also changed the engine oil.
