Just got back from movie theater where we watched Tom Cruise in the new Mission Impossible movie: lots of action as expected. Cool in theater because it is 100 degrees outside here right now and humid.

We are trying to decide what to do in Pittsburgh. I want to go to the parts stores, mom wants to go to IKEA and dad wants to get out of here. I have no problem going to IKEA but I also want to go to some parts stores here. I’m so sick of always having arguments on every single vacation. I tried to check out today but can’t get any money back dad was complaining because he doesn’t want to stay an extra night. I had planned on going to a game today too but nobody will go with me so that’s off and I don’t have tickets. Then dad said just eat the $204 and leave so we can go to Menards in West Virginia but I’m not doing that.

You were advised for the last few years to save for a replacement because failure was imminent. And it did fail, and you dumped thousands into a piece of junk that isn’t even in good condition. Get a bus pass, figure out your schedule, and don’t spend a dime if it’s not uncooked groceries from the supermarket, or paying the electric or water bill.

No car for you until you have a written budget and enough saved to buy something worthwhile, which is probably $5k or more.

Kudos on making your thoughts known, and I appreciate the best wishes, you want to know more "behind the scenes" I'd tell you, I can't clutter up the thread but also not going to just let two people outline a whole narrative and not respond. If I don't address these things, then they get accepted as-is. Maybe another thread is needed for all that.

Next vacation, take your own ride, a buddy or 3, and party it up.
A little separation from your parents would be good for all of you.
My last vacation with my parents, I was 14, after that any holidays were with friends or a girlfriend, until i married at age 20.

Instead, he's driving the piss out of his mom's Taurus Another vehicle he can't afford to fix if he blows it up.

How far back do we go on this train wreck? The Honda? The Expedition? The Blazer? The Volvo? Systematic destruction through abuse and neglect while burning money on useless wizards to address wholly imagined "problems" while tires are run to the cords. The vehicles, rolling liabilities, eagerly courting disaster, being piloted at speeds they should never be going, mere inches from people totally oblivious to the rolling hazard blasting by them.

As you note, some nod given to responsibility with money and avoiding blindly casting it into the void would have allowed for purchase of something in decent mechanical condition with good reliability. Instead, there's no money, and efforts are being made to accrue enough to try and source the 4th engine for a car that's clearly too far gone to be worth the time, effort, or expense.

I remember us having a conversation about what would be a smart purchase for somebody with limited means that would provide good reliability and minimal expense. I also remember that advice being soundly ignored, as it is now. It was frustrating then, and even moreso after, as the saga grew legs, chapters even. That's why I no longer engage with him. Why bother putting in the effort to provide sage advice if it always falls on deaf ears? Wasted effort, wasted time, wasted investment.
