what 25,000 mile oil changes can do to a '03 Toyota

Very sad, but I know someone who bought a brand new Corolla and then called me up in a year to tell me that the engine light had come on, I asked him when did he do the last oil change and his reply was never, he had just been topping it up, never knew it needed a change. Now this same Corolla after an oil change lasted this guy for 90,000 miles before it got stolen.

How will you go about cleaning it? Not sure what you do in cases like that.

Well my sister decided to forget about changing the oil in her car again. This is the second time that she has put 25K miles a single oil change and now the car smokes when being started. We started to pull the engine apart and found soo much sludge buildup in the topend of the engine that it clogged all the oil drainback holes.

1) Was that a group IV/V synthetic, or was that $1/quart dino oil, you know, the 'special' cheap stuff that is sold to quickie-lubes by the tankerload full?

2) Was the oil level kept properly topped up, or was it allowed to run a couple quarts low?

3) Was the engine otherwise 'mechanically sound'? ie: no coolant leaks, properly functioning controls and instruments, etc?

Before some ignoramus trots this out as an example of why one should never run 25k miles between an oil change in a Toyota, I think we need answers to the above questions.

Agreed. This is obviously oblivious car care.

I could care less what the OCI was! The OCI was obviously too long!! Even with all of the Amsoil extended OCI we have seen I still think it is not a good practice even with top notch synthetics. I have yet to see a 25,000 or longer UOA that impressed me even with bypass filtration.

It is a shame that some people abuse their vechile becasue these are the idiots that trade in often becasue they would rather have a new vechile with a warranty then one that needs lots of work. Never mind that it was their own ignorance or stupidity that set the ball in motion.

Clearly this women does not deserve the privilage to own and operate a car. IF this was a pet she would be draged into court for animal cruelty etc....

The second time, another car???
What happened to the first one?
Is she like...rich?
This Solara is not exactly cheap of a vehicle.

I don't know, I am assuming it's the second time with this car judging by the amount of sludge. I am not the brother of this chick, like I said in the original post, I found this situation on another board and thought I would post it on here.

Amsoil was created for this type of person to prevent this situation.

That car could be the ultimate poster-child for Auto-Rx!

Hey, Frank...you up to the challenge?!

I think Mobil needs to change its marketing scheme and rename "Mobil 1 Truck and SUV" and change it to Mobil 1 Dumb Blonde Formula.

I suspect the factory oil in the car was of decent quality and she may never have even had to add oil to a new car over the 25,000 miles of abuse it took.

This reminds me of the guy who bought a new 4 cyl car made in Japan and heard they run forever. So he never changed the oil and kept adding and traded it in at 62000 miles.I saw the car it ran but that was about it.

Reminds me of when I borrowed a Toyota pickup about 20 years back. The owner had that attitude, its a Toy - runs forever. I checked under the hood when I got it, couple of qts low, the oil in it was really dirty. I topped off w/ a couple of quarts, used it for the week. After I was done, I drained the oil in it and added fresh oil w/o a filter change. It was probably another year before he got around to another oil change. I never said anything. Its a Toyota, runs forever.

Al - that's disgusting. Please send picture.

As a side, I too thought this was Al Amatuzio horror story.

Eeewe, that's gross.

Now let's not degrade this to an Amsoil thread.

I wonder if this is an example for just one of the many reasons cars depreciate so.

I was kind of surprised to see what I took to be relatively little cam lobe wear. The bearings, pistons and cylinders are probably another story.

I wonder if there's enough coking on the backside of the pistons to cause noticeable imbalance of the assembly?

Interesting...anyone else have other pictures/accounts of engine deposits and operating conditions?
