Hi all. I run the 1/4 mile trophy dash on Friday nights in my 04 Mustang GT, usually around 12 passes per week. Should I consider 5w20 PP or is the Motorcraft 5w20 I have been using probably up to snuff for 3K intervals? If anyone here races weekends and has an oil anaylsis to back up opinion, it would be appreciated.

Are you running cat. converters? If not, you might want to step up to Brad Penn Penn Grade 1 10w-30 or Valvoline VR-1 10w-30 if you really put it through it's paces.

Drag races are such short bursts of high oil temperature, unless you have power adders, I really would not worry that much.

I would probably shorten the interval though.

how come you ask about the cats?

Sorry, forgot to add this car is also my daily driver during the week and sees a mix of mostly highway, but some town driving. I have the stock H pipe and cats, but with no mufflers, sounds pretty mean. Car is mostly stock with no forced induction.

Those oils have a LOT more anti-wear additives and such than regular street oils. That really improves their performance but can cause emissions that will wear your cats out faster.

I don't think it will be a problem as long as his car doesn't burn oil. I've been running the Amsoil ACD in my TL for most of it's life and with 65,000 miles it hasn't cause any problems with the cats. I mention my car because it's a ULEV car and it doesn't take much to set a check engine light.

I do agree that for dragracing with a nearly stock motor anything will work.

FYI, I am under powertrain warranty for another 50K miles or until early 2011, so I am using 5w20 per manufacturer's recommendation.

Using a more viscous oil will not be of much concern when they learn you are racing and have an engine warranty problem. Not that the 5W20 isn't working, just take a couple UOAs to be sure.

Hmmm, doesn't participating in sanctioned drag racing void the warranty?

What kind of times are you putting down??

I run high 14's. I'm sure the car is capable of more, but she's my DD so I don't powershift or bounce off the rev limiter. I run index races only, so I strive for smooth and consistent and good start lights.

Since your warranty would 'probably' be voided by racing, I'd be inclined to use the New Amsoil Dominator 5W-20, and run it to about 5-6k miles...would be a good application for that oil.
