Looking for recommendations for a weed eater. I think I want a gas one. How much do you really need to spend to get a high quality one?

Is this one any good?

I've always been a Husqvarna 5XX type of guy but I've been very impressed with the two little Echo trimmers I got from my local OPE dealer for $185 each. Has plenty of power for a "cheap" string trimmer and it feels much sturdier than the cheap Husqvarna trimmers in my opinion. My only problem is that the included head sucks. I replaced them but it wouldn't be a big deal if you don't use a lot of string.

Both of my local Echo dealers are about $30 cheaper than Lowes or Home Depot for the exact same trimmer so definitely give your local Echo place a call (if you have one).

Echo. 5 year home owner warranty if you use 89 octane along with Echo Power blend two stroke oil. Mine is at least fifteen years old and still starts and runs great.

do you want just a string trimmer? Years ago I bought a Home Depot Ryobi straight shaft trimmer, 2 stroke. It worked good for several years and when it died I bought a 4 stroke power head to replace it. I stayed with Ryobi because I have the string trimmer, sidewalk edger, rototiller, pole saw etc... attachments. I would love to buy a Stihl but to replace all the attachments would be a small fortune.

Just my $0.02

I have a Stihl FS70R. No complaints and no issues with power in big weeded areas. Can get about 30-45 mins on a tank.

My Echo is probably 20 years old and runs like a champ. I use the dirt bike pre-mix fuel, 50:1. Can't remember the model but it was a no frills one I bought at Home Depot. I added the brush blade kit to it a few years back. That works great too.

The Echo recommendations are spot on.

If you don't have a whole lot to cut and it's mostly grass & weeds, the battery Ryobi is pretty good. I use it more than my gas Stihl FS-90.

I think I might need a brush blade for the overgrowth part of my hill that is getting pretty dense, I could get a picture tommorow if needed but do brush blades work on most everything?

I don't know that I would put one on a Ryobi electric. It's not a powerhouse at all, but its fine for grass and weeds. If you need more, then go for the gas Echo.

The plastic blade kit on my Stihl works very well for the thicker stuff. When I have to do that type of cutting, I'm glad to have the gas trimmer available.
