WD-40 Chain Lube - Boraticus?

Kerosine (K-1) is pretty stinky. Odorless paint thinner works OK for cleaning, but not sure how it is on rubber components. WD-40 cleans better than K-1 and is rubber comptible. I use the bulk WD-40 and a sponge to apply it to warm chain. As a lubricant, WD-40 is not so good, but the chain lube is inside out "O"-ring chains. I do apply a thin dressing of Stihl or Huskvarna chainsaw bar and chain lube to the rollers to reduce wear of sprockets and rollers, that stuff does a realy good job of staying on the chain instead of flinging all over the bike and rider.

I have rode many miles in the sand dunes with my 250R 2 Stroke Honda ATV. Nothing is worse on a chain than sand. Before a weekend of riding I spray a small amount of wd40 on a rag and wipe a light film over the chain just to keep it from rusting. Otherwise I keep the chain free of any oil, I dont want sand sticking to the chain. The chain is a O-ring chain and the one on my ATV has lasted about 3 years.

Oil on a chain does nothing but collect dirt and grit and that acts like sand paper on your sprocket and chain links wearing them down and reducing service life.
