WD-40 causes a sticky goo and hard varnish?

In a previous life, did a lot of estate gun buys and auctions of old timers that used nothing but WD-40 on their guns and it was not pretty in most cases requiring either severe depreciated offers or gunsmithing to clean and rework the internals. I would cringe if I opened a customers safe or storage closet and see a can of WD-40 laying around.

Just picked up semi automatic rifle from gunsmith. Bolt, trigger assembly gummed up with WD40, could not move bolt, trigger or safety. Even barrel gummed up. He had to disassemble soak in degreaser, 48 hours, and still scrub it off metal. WD40 advertises it for guns, but don’t do it.
