Waste? Or OK?

I've posted about inheriting a 95 Camry 2.2L in excellent shape and 68k miles but due to lots of short trips there is a light coating of varnish I can see. Nothing I fee warrants any sleepless nights.

I've run a few short OCI's with Pennzoil Conventional and plan on using Pennzoil High Mileage with Puralator Classic filter at the next oil change. I'm thinking of 4k mile OCI.

What do you all think?

Who cares about a light coating of varnish? It doesn't impede lubrication or oil flow...so there is no change in operation, only appearance...and, let me get this straight, you're going to obsess about the appearance of the inside of your engine?

I really dont get this either. Some say it`s a pre curser to sludge. I dont know.

I tend to agree with Lexus--not sure about the varnish leading to sludge. Had a 91 Park Avenue and sold it with 279,000 on it. It had varnish also but the guy that bought it for his grandson said that there was 312,000 on it when the transmission went down. Engine still running fine.

My that's quite the imbelishment. I said no such thing.

Hey!! No worries - your plan should be fine. Man! I still do 3,000 miles intervals with the dino I use. 6,000 with synthetic. To each his own--if it makes sense to you and you're within the recommendations of the cars specs., feel comfortable.

Don't use conventional oil in your case. The varnish is caused by using engine design and using pre SM conventional oil in the past. I used PP and Mobil 1 and get varnish out in my fleet. After the varnish is gone, you are safe to use SN conventional. However, varnish is not a problem for engine life. My 2001 Toyota Camry has varnish by just looking through the filling hole. I used PU this time and seem soften the varnish a bit and I can remove the black varnish by piece of napkin. The oil is getting very black after a 3K. I plan to keep this car until 300K.

You are now ready for a synthetic with a reputation for good cleaning over the normal OCI interval such as PU or M1 then run it 6000 miles or more.

It's a 17 year old Camary. The light coating of varnish is absolutely meaningless, and an attempt to "clean" it is a total waste of time.

Use a plain old conventional oil and the engine will still outlast the rest of the vehicle, and you won't be wasting your money on synthetics.

Wait a minute, you can see your head through the fill hole in your Camry? That`s not the V-6 then is it?

You're confusing varnish with sludge. If you have black stuff that can be wiped off, it's sludge.

The initial coating is hard to wipe off. After using PP and PU, I can wipe them off. So I am sure it is the varnish.

+1.....Mobil 1 5w30....has good cleaning abilities and is a top-shelf oil. Use a PureOne filter....and an OCI of 6 to 7K.

You should have many good years of service from this vehicle.

One other thing you might consider. Change out the transmission oil....with a good synthetic.... such as Mobil ATF.

Use M1 and P1 on wifes Armada. I like the combo. I have 4 5qt jugs of P HM so I'm going to be using that first.

I did change out the transmission fluid and filter at 68k. Went with synthetic, but it was MaxLife. Amazed how [censored] well it runs. Smooth and great gas mileage (mix 24/highwat 31).

I'd just change every 4000 miles with Pennzoil conventional for three changes, and then do longer changes or a different oil at your discretion. Your own plan is good though.
