Washer Recommendations

I have a Speed Queen in my walkout basement apartment I rent to a niece. I bought it new and it already broke down.

The capacity of the Speed Queen Sucks. If you use a dryer it doesn't spin the water out of the clothes as well as a front loader.
So it takes longer to dry clothes and the fact the Speed Queen uses more water than a front loader, a reliable front loader might pay for itself. One thing the Speed Queen wont do that my LG front loader can is wash my cal-king comforter. As far as getting the best wash, that award goes to my Maytag Pet Pro. Yes, 3 sets in my Polish Palace.

More Speed Queen misery which probably wouldn't have happened in a front loader:

😂 Who washes a pillow never heard of that in my life. Pillow case of course not a pillow. I would be venting my frustration at the person who decided that it was a good idea then the washing machine

As a retired tech I always had to school customers. Its a CLOTHES washer, not a rug, pillow, bedspread, mattress pad, dog bed, etc. washer if you want it to be long lasting and reliable. Take that big stuff to the laundromat to wash in a large, oversized commercial machine.
I have a method for those: concrete & clothesline 😷

Bought a new Whirlpool clothes washer about 4 years ago and it's already having problems. Just won't complete a cycle. Evidently, I have to pull it out, take a cover off the back to get to the spec sheet, and read the error codes. Then go from there.

The previous machine lasted for decades. This POS is already giving problems. Is it even possible to purchase a quality appliance that is going to last these days? Any recommendations?

I will add that we only use the thing for 2 small loads a week. Truly aggravating.

Thanks.

If you buy this particular model, though expensive, it will last for years to come.

Thats the exact model I have after tiring of the big box store JUNK! I wanted as much ANALOG I could find, I prefer my TV screen to be on my TV , I was sold when I found out I can fill the stainless tube to the TOP, NO EPA making me wash clothing with "He" detergent and a cup of water! Fill to the top and poor in the old school soap and let it do what it does best!
A simple knob to turn is exactly what I wanted and found in this washer.

My large family works hard, one is in Chief school, my youngest still in High School works as a Seafood restaurant dishwasher, and I have one other in food service and one who turns a wrench so my washer is always full to the top with clothing stained from Seafood to axle grease!

This SPEED Queen is to clothing what my old Snapper Mower is to overgrown Grass! Commercial Grade!

My 9 yr old Whirlpool is being replaced tomorrow . A bearing inside the gear case is screaming and the repair guy said it would be $600 to repair . Not going to spend that much on a machine that old .

Speed queen, pay once and live with clean clothes and reliability! I have grown up with them and I have no negatives.

Just bought a 2nd control board for my POS Maytag Commercial washer. The board is discontinued already after 4 yrs. Getting used off of Fleabay. What a pile of junk this machine is ! Waiting on 2nd board to be delivered. Right now, the junkpile only works if you unplug it after every use. Going for a Speed Queen after I'm done messing around with this garbage.

I feel your pain...
However my feeling is this.

Why a new Speed Queen? The new ones have electronics too. The price is really expensive.
With that said I have no problem with anyone wanting to buy anything that makes them happy for any reason.

New appliances are not going to last like appliances as little as of a decade ago. Two decades ago and they maybe still be running.
In today's world no matter the brand. Might as well go for a reasonable price and expect to replace it in 10 years if your lucky enough

(fingers crossed)
So something like this, one third the cost of what someone posted for a Speed Queen and you can buy two of them over time for the same price. They also have a model with more options that you wont need for a little more money.
With all these machines always select "DEEP WASH" for it to act like an older style washer and that means clean clothes using lots of water vs washing your clothes in a puddle of water because of what maybe government regulations.

We have the 2 year older version of this one below though we chose the model with the agitator, at the time the same model came with and without one, maybe it still does I dont know. Works well. We always use "Deep Wash" the water level will adjust to the clothes load but the clothes will always be fully submerged in water the old fashioned way if you chose "Deep Wash"

Oops, here it is with agitator

My old Whirlpool made Kenmore gas drier is 20 years old, and still chugging along. The light switch failed, but that was an easy fix. My washer, bought at the same time, died 7 years ago, replaced with a HE top load Whirlpool, that's starting to make strange noises.

Speed Queen is often mentioned as the best, and I'll consider those when the time comes, but LG seems to get a lot of positive recommendations at half the cost. You can buy two machines for one. It will be a tough decision when the time comes.

That’s funny when we sold our home of 16 years two years ago all our appliances were still running. The house was brand new at the time 16 years and so all the appliances.
They consisted of Kenmore elite refrigerator purchased by us

whirlpool range, dishwasher supplied by the builder

And whirlpool gold I think it was gold? Washer and dryer. Or maybe that was elite too.

Anyway, one repair to the icemaker I replaced the part myself and one plastic gear at the top of the whirlpool washer agitator that I replaced myself for like I forgot 10 bucks

I just don’t see that happening with any brand anymore or maybe better said I don’t expect any brand to last that long so anything that does will be a bonus. Actually I hope I’m still alive.!!!! 😕

Considering a SQ. Do you or anyone know how much water they use for a regular cycle? I am on septic and try to be careful.

My mother's old house, also on septic, had the washer on a dedicated drain line, which dumped to the street. And this is in So Calif, "the big city". Ha ha. The drain line was a flexible plastic tube, which collapsed flat when not in use. Take a walk around the neighborhood, and you can see them all over the place at that time. The city eventually converted to a modern sewer system, at which time, the washer was connected to the full house drain system, like it should have been! The lemon trees in everyones back yard were quite disappointed when the septic was disconnected

It depends on the model. The older top loader Speed Queens with mechanical controls used up to 45 gallons on the heavy duty setting, while the newer models use up to 25 gallons. I believe there is only one specialized Speed Queen washer that is Energy Star certified due to the significant amount of water consumption. In any case, stay with the TC (classic) models since the TR series are not good at agitation or deep cleaning.

I would seriously look at the Maytag vs Speed Queen roll over test in YouTube. As a SQ owner, I can attest that has happened to me. I would have bought the commercial Maytag or the commercial brother Whirlpool if I could do it over again. Also look at the Maytag’s commercial washer tear down on YouTube. Too much herd mentality in Soeed Queens and some of it comes from people who’ve never owned one.

That happened to me. although the parts were only 130$ + shipping +50 for some more preventive parts
and half a day of me dragging it somewhere I could tear it down , repairing, and putting back.

The problem was "sounded like a jet engine on spin cycle"

Decided a 10+ year old 225$ washer didn't own me anything and curbed it. for the 6 month old speed queen front loader.

At least with a speed queen.. if it needs a repair.. its worth repairing.
