Walmart is now carrying the Tokyo Roki black Subaru oil filter

Yes it will fit but the bypass setting may be too high. The Wix cross for the -20A part lists 27psid for this newer filter, The old filter for your 2003 EJ253 was 23psig +/-

Though it would "screw on" and likely not leak, I would not run this filter on your 2003 Legacy vehicle.

And unless you Nephew is experienced with the "challenging" Subaru EJ oil changes - I would go to the dealer and pay the extra cash.

Had you been using a cup wrench to extract the filter from the encircled converter heat shields ?
So the filter the Subaru parts dept would sell me for my 03 Legacy would be a different model with the correct bypass setting than this one sold at Walmart?

The Wix is the best filter for it?

My nephew has had a couple of WRX’s and used to work on my Uncle’s several Subaru’s which included a few EJ engines.
I’ve owned 10 Subaru’s over the years with most of them EJ engines. What is challenging about changing the oil on them?

If it's the same part number, then it's the same filter.

I’ll have to call and ask them. I’ve never paid attention to the part number.
I have not owned a Subaru with an EJ engine in over 15 years. I know at the time (2011) the new FB25 and outgoing EJ253 engines were both available - and the filter part number DID NOT CROSS. I also would not have a filter with a 27psid bypass rating anywhere near my engine especially if Subaru are doing a "one part fits all" inventory management.

The O.E. parts counter U.S.A. service part has a retained O-ring base gasket ("p-gasket") that have never wept or leaked in any of my installations.
I have had both Wix and Fram with flat gaskets weep, distort and also melt/stick.

Just my 2 cents

While not doubting what you have seen, I don't get how you have had so many issues with the filters.

I have personally used Wix, WixXP, PurolatorONE, Fram Endurance and Tokyo Roki filters over the years and have never had a weep/leak or melted gasket. I lube the gasket with oil when installing and it always comes off clean and easy.

Yes, I know I am but one anecdotal data point but the filter housing on your FB20 is the same as my FB25 so I don't get why yours seems to dislike non-OE filter styles so much.

So the Subaru parts department said the filter they sell for a 2003 Legacy is parts number 15208AA100. Is that the right filter for my 03 Legecy?

If the Subaru parts department says that's the filter part number, then I'd say that's the filter part number. Who else beside the Subaru dealership parts department would know any better?

Curious what the price was from them?

Price online seems to range from $9 - $14 or so depending on source for the A100 Roki.

Playing the "couple bucks more" game can lead down a deep rabbit hole paying $15-$20 for a filter if one goes long enough. Sometimes the filter one wants is what someone is going to pay and stop.
We’re talking less than $3 for a much better filter though. A filter that is so close in comparison to the $23~ Amsoil offerings that makes it well worth it.

Sounds like you have had quite the bad luck with Subarus and lubrication. The boxers are clatter machines, just how they roll.

Are you talking about the Fram Endurance? I’ve seen YouTube videos that say that the Fram Endurance and the Amsoil filter are the same thing made by Champ. I believe the Fram Endurance is $12.97 at Walmart. The Fram Extraguard (Orange can) is $9.24 for the one that fits my 03 Legacy. The best budget option for my Subaru would be the Supertech at only $3.84.

Who's ever interested I have five Subaru Factory filters and one Fram, were from 2023 Subaru , all were bought at the dealership except the Fram. One of the dealership filters was during that period where they did not have a logo on it. sell all for 25 plus shipping. I live in California

That's the one. $12.97 for a much better filter than OEM at only $2.97 less, seems like an easy decision. Being honest, I just don't get excited about OEM filters and oil. There are such better options out there!

If me, then most everyone.

The FB is quiet as a mouse with Factory oil and factory filter. It has hydraulic lash adjusters.

The EJ has a mechanical cam with lashed roller rockers - so a bit noisier. When the exhaust shields start to unweld, they get pretty nasty - but that is not the engine proper - though many unknowingly think it is.

There is typical noise, then there is "I am destructing quicker" noise.

Just trying to minimise the latter.

Not that many issues. Experiences differ. I may tend to bring them up over and over on these pages, though.

Probably two (2) Wix leaks 40 plus oil changes on EJ253 motor, maybe a couple Purolator weeps (one from a can crimp) on the 1.8 and two (2) instances of gasket sticking/melting just recently on FB 2.0 and 2.5. That surprised me. No such issues on a recent WIX XP.

Of course, the gaskets get lubed with clean oil.
Never ever had an issue with a Roki or Blue Fram with the P-gasket and torque stop.
Come on now! - this is good olé Arco here - doing the boogie for over a 1/2 Century now!

Better to ask Fram about the melting. I will say those FB run hot. I recently burnt my hand on the prop rod after a 74 mile interstate run at ~3500 rpm, and that was after a 1/2 hour cool down - or was it a heat soak, lol. (The 6 speed mt is geared very low)
If someone want's that Fram Ultra gasket I can send it to them for lab testing. I may have saved it. It may have colour-code bars on the edge.

I am quite familiar with subarus, have had them for 22 years. EJ18, EJ22, EJ207 Version 7, EJ251, EJ255, now FB25. Have never used OEM fluids or filters, they are just too pricey for what they are and what else is available in the market. Like the topic of this thread, drop $5 off the OEM filters and now we're talking. Have only had the infamous head gasket issue on the EJ251 and two upstream O2 sensors go bad in my time owning all these.

EJ series is hands down quieter than the FB, in my experience. I'm not saying these motors have a "death rattle," rather a personality with some ticks!! I agree though, they motors are beautifully smooth otherwise.

When you removed that gasket, was there actually left over "melted" gasket material left on the mount? Was that charred hornet involved? 🙃

No residue on the mounting boss. So not "melted" per se. Maybe it's a design feature. No weeping for sure!

It was extremely hard to twist off the filter, as the back surface of the gasket was very effectively "braking" the rotation. Also, I don't have a cap wrench for that can, and using my traditional band wrench is hampered by brackets and hoses and the oil fill tube. Choice words were uttered, lol.

Again no issues encountered with a similar flat gasket on a Wix XP ... or a Supertech MP.
If I ever run a Fram across a future OCI, I'll remove the gasket and lube both sides or the rubber, LOL.

I think the little hornet was after the sweet nectar of some spilled Valvoline Advanced, and over indulged.

That's not a "melted" gasket, just a stuck gasket. Happens on many different filters ... that's what leads to a "double gasket" situation if the filter installer doesn't see the old base gasket was left behind.
