Walmart Gives You Less Oil

True.
But if you measured the oil carefully, you'd likely find that every jug has slightly more than the volume claimed.
This is true for most packaged goods sold by either volume or weight.

I purchase a 5.0 container of QS Defy at Walmart few months go and after getting home I saw thatit had a little less than 5 qts. I now check the containers when I purchase oil at Walmart.

Exactly. To the bystander, they are selling for less from apparently the same bottle.

To someone looking closely, the math may actually indicate less value on the Walmart end.

But this way when the others are having a great sale, Walmart gets around the price match.

In other threads people have cited other things where Walmart sells a bit less volume to give the perception of a lower price. Of course the per unit price is the same or more...

Honestly, it really doesn't matter. Either way you dump the whole jug in, not like you're going to leave that 0.1 quart in the jug for next time.

Personally, I'd find it more convenient if they sold oil in gallon jugs rather than 5 quarts. Used to be that most cars took 5 quarts, but these days many vehicles don't. We have 3 vehicles, and none of them use 5 quarts. They use 4,6,and 8 quarts.

I don't see this as the issue at all. The difference between 5 and 5.1 quarts is 2%. Walmart prices are almost always way less than 98% of the auto parts stores' prices. Sometimes Walmart is 50-60% of the auto parts stores. I think 9 times out of 10 Walmart is still selling oil for far less per oz.

Nowadays with everyone having a smartphone, you can easily calculate the cost per quart of oil from a 5.0qt jug of oil from Walmart vs a 5.1qt jug from elsewhere.

Usually Walmart comes out cheaper in the end.

AAP lists PP at $36.99 for their 5.1 qt. jug whereas Walmart has the 5 qt. PP for $22.47. That means you're paying $14.52 for that extra .1 quart. Maybe I'm not looking close enough, but how does that indicate less value on the Walmart end?

So, what is your point exactly? The oil level is lower because 5.0 is less than 5.1.

The added .1qt in a 5qt sump will immediately cause engine failure by overfilling the crankcase, the crank skimming the oil, pumping bubbles, then BANG!

Good point. Good luck trying to return it to an auto part store.

Besides, the SKU is completely different, so the moment an AAP (or AZ, or PB) employee tries to scan it in, it'll tell him that this product isn't carried by AAP (or AZ, or PB).

Luckily, my 96' Prelude VTEC calls for 5.1 qts. of oil(10w30).

At regular prices, perhaps. But when put on sale with a filter of $x value, the auto parts price can be far cheaper. Ive got a ton of good oil deals that way.

And this is why Walmart wants their own SKU. Not because regular retail price is competitive, but rather because published sale price from the part store can be much less.

They want to say that they will match the price of the exact item, and since their exact item is unique, they cant match it. Most people will just accept that and pay them.

Are you implying that when Pep Boys offers the 5.1 qt jug with a Mobil 1 filter for $29.99 (including EP), and Walmart is selling Mobil 1 for $24.xx or EP for $26.xx, that Walmart is extending a deal?

This is all about pricematching on published sales.

I guess it varies by product. For stuff like regular M1, WM regular prices seem to be as good as other stores' sale prices.

We've discussed it in the past. The reason for having 5.1 qt vs 5 is to make it difficult/impossible for consumers to attempt price match. You can't price match if the quantities are different, and therefore the product is different.

Exactly. They are different therefore price matching doesn't apply. I noticed that when the pennzoil specials are going on the jugs are 4.73 litres which is a bizarre quantity, but for 22 bucks a jug for pp I won't complain
