This is an interesting article, from Modern Tire Dealer.

Under a new partnership with BP Lubricants USA Inc., Wal-mart Stores Inc. is phasing in the use of the innovative Castrol Enviro-Pack (e-Pack) and e-Dispense system. Their first collaboration has been tested in a smaller, prototype store.

The new store solely runs on the Castrol motor oil e-Dispense and e-Pack. It has eliminated costly bulk tanks that turn inventory slowly.

"For smaller volume premium fluids, oil changes are performed by manually dispensing out of the e-Packs instead of using costly plastic bottles, reducing the amount of plastic being placed into landfills," says BP Lubricants.

"Our partnership with Castrol and investment in the e-Pack product for our Tire and Lube Express business addresses a dual business objective -- greater operational efficiency and a focus on more environmentally friendly packaging," says Scott McCarter, senior director of Walmart Tire and Lube Express operations. "Our work with Castrol is unique in our space and has revolutionized how we purchase and utilize oil.

"Replacing more costly bulk tanks with e-Packs and e-Dispense units will have a substantive benefit for our business by reducing construction costs and improving inventory management."

The new oil change facilities build on the work that Castrol and Walmart have done on e-Packs since 2008. The e-Pack packaging, a poly bag inside corrugated carton, is more environmentally friendly than quart bottles, which allows for more than 85% reduction in discarded plastic.

BP adds that as a result of businesses such as Walmart switching to Castrol's e-Pack and phasing out more traditional plastic quart bottles, Castrol reached a tremendous milestone with more than two million pounds of plastic saved from entering the waste stream. The volume of bottles that were eliminated from the waste stream could fill approximately eight Olympic-sized pools.

Walmart says it has eliminated approximately one million quarts of oil waste at its 2,500 Tire and Lube Express facilities in the United States.

In recognition of the environmental benefits and strengthening partnership between both companies, BP recently became a co-recipient of Walmart's Vendor of the Year Award for Sustainability. For more information on Castrol Enviro-Pack, visit www.castrolusa.com/epack.

WM here has been using E packs for sometime now. castrol isn't the only one either. I know they have quite a few brands in Poly bagged boxes now. U even see Rotella E packs, Pennzoil and others

Nothing beats bottled oil though IMO

My local Wal-Mart had one of those sitting around on the shelf. They wanted $100 for it, this store didn't have a TLE.

If I read between the lines, they don't want the bulk oil infrastructure. Consistent with the rumors of some walmarts losing not profitable TLEs in a few years.

The newest Walmart they built in our area doesn't even have a TLE. Funny thing is, they have a better oil selection and a nicer auto department in general compared with the closest one to me, which does have a TLE!

I hate e-packs. The whole area surrounding the shelf holding them is one big oil slick.
The buckets they use has to be the least accurate junk available. I put 6 quarts according to it in a vehicle that takes 6 quarts and it will be overfull.
Seen multiple times where someone slipped and spilled a gallon plus all over someones engine.
Then when you look down into an empty bucket you can see the built up grit from being open and collecting dirt between oil changes.
I...prefer to drain cars that are getting a E-Pack change.

A few years ago I worked at a Tire Kingdom which used the Pennzoil equivalent. The boxes would always deform and then tear apart when you would pick them up. Leakage was common, and finally the thing that bothered me the most was getting the last quart out of the package.

the e pack I saw yesterday was for Castrol HM 5-30 was 95 bucks for a 6 gallon 'package'.

6 gal X at least 10 lbs/gal = 60 lbs ---like a bag of concrete

Ow! Never mind then...

Agreed - How so?

Our shop is full of cases of oil and every engine gets filled with oil, quart by quart. Now, that's fine if you're a private citizen, but when you're a shop (or TLE), can you image the sheer volume of waste in both oil and plastic that gets sent off to the landfill every year???? Personally, I feel that there's no call for it.

I'm all for TLE's and other shops reducing their oil related wastes. Bulk tanks or 55 gallon drums may not be glamorous, but they're easily re-used and contribute to less environmental impact.

I honestly can't see how switching from bulk to an e-pack is cost effective, but I'm sure that Evil Mart has it all figured out....

Several TLE's get their bulk oil from us in 55 gallon drums. It just makes sense. We fill those drums ourselves from huge oil tanks, which completely eliminates any wasted plastic bottles.

It sure is fun when we get pick tickets that have 8-10 of these on them, and we have to cart them on the truck all at once. That's roughly the same amount of oil as a 55 gallon drum, and 5x the pain in the butt.

This is our pricing on the E-packs and other Castrol bulk stuff. You can see that there is no price savings.
