VW V10 TDI (PD) - New Engine Break In Oil

I am in the middle of swapping a brand new old stock V10 PD TDI crate engine into an older Touareg. These PD engines are known to be very tough on camshafts. Any recommendations on an oil to use for the initial break in? I was debating either a 505.01 spec oil (LM 5W40 Top Tec 4100) or Mobil 1 TDT 5W40. Does anyone happen to have a virgin oil analysis report for the Top Tec 4100? I was wondering if I should add some MOS2 or ZDDP for additional wear protection during the initial break in. The DPFs are not a concern, I just want to protect the engine.

While I don't claim to know all the science behind in my experience I've seen manufacturers suggest a lower grade of oil for break-in. I'd suggest a 5w-30 for break-in & then move into a 5w-40. I would not add any additives to the oil.

I did the cam and lifters on my BRM TDI (PD) Jetta. It was recommended that I use Joe Gibbs driven 15w50 break in oil. I have to say that the break in went well and the cam and lifters looked perfect after that. It has been 20k miles since the install and all is wearing well. The oil is expensive, but many swear by it for a reason.

I did the in initial break in (30 minutes) with that oil, as well as changing it with the same oil and going 500 miles on it. Then just switched to the recommended Pentosin HP II 5w40 or LiquiMoly 4100 top tec 5w40. I stopped using the Pentosin because they have changed the label on it saying that it now supersedes VW 505.01 but meets VW511.00 instead. I'm not sure if those changes create an issue and do not want to have to change my cam again any sooner than necessary. Since yours has basically the same setup on it, that should be safe for your break in procedure.

Break in oil would be good. But you went ahead with a new v10 tdi replacement? That's brave, just about everyone including me in this situation would just chuck it and a regular gas suv. Godspeed, I hope you get everything you need out of that new engine.

Actual break in oils will chemically wear the engine. None of those oils you're suggesting are "break in" oils. They're oils you could normally use anyway. Adding ZDDP could increase wear so no don't do that. Just run whatever you intent to run and change it early if you're worried about it.

Due to increased wear?
