VW OIL Conversation

As others have said, if it meets VW 502 spec, it is ok to use. It does not have to be 5w30 or 5w40, the spec is the important factor. For instance, under the hood of my GLI is a sticker that says to use only oil that meets the VW 502 spec.

I've been driving VW for almost 10 years, my last VW was a 2004 Passat 1.8T with over 130k miles. I never had oil issues (including sludge), always used oil that met the VW 502 spec. The car will not explode at 90-100k miles. Keep it maintained properly, and it will last. It just happens to be a little pickier on when maintenance is done, but I'd rather have one than a Honda or Toyota.

Absolutely. There are several makes/models that I wouldn't buy, even to use as a clapped out beater. I have personal experience with a 2000 Passant. Great power train, great handling, by 2006 at 90K the suspension was toast, tie rods were about to fall off, the PS pump exploded, literally. It cost $1300 just to get it safe to drive home, ~185mi. Many other issues, car was a first new car for my son and was carefully maintained. It was a money pit. At 120K he traded it for a Honda hybrid. He got lucky, someone did him a favor and totaled it for him. Now he has a wife, two kids, and drives a really nice 2005 Corolla. Live and learn.

Well, we all have our priorities.

I find Corollas very dangerous personally because they put me to sleep.

This is verbatim from the owner's manual. Not much left open to interpretation if you ask me.

Good point. Based on this, personally I'd have no problem using 0w-40 or 0w-30 oil that meets VW 502.00 spec.

VWs with high miles are commonplace in Europe. I suspect that either;
VWoA markets a substandard product
Or
Most Americans fail to properly maintain their vehicles

There are more than a few Passats over at PassatWorld with more than 250k miles. I traded mine at 130k miles (or so) and it was needing some things, but still very reliable and driveable. Last year I took a job further from home and had less time to do the work myself, and don't trust many people to do the work for me. I traded while I could still get a decent amount of money for it ($4k) for a new GLI. Looking back, I probably should've kept the Passat, but I honestly just wanted something different. The older Passats take some work to make them last, but they are good cars.

I traded my B5.5 1.8T with 128K because it needed new axels in front. Looking back, probably I suppose to keep the car, replace axels, but I just got bored with the car.
It looked like it had 28K not 128K.

The story becomes more convoluted. I just got an email from VW stating that the list I was given was out of date and I should go with a new list (attached to the email). The new list is much shorter. I think the first list they sent me was the world wide list, and the second is the US list. Interestingly, I can find no current list of the 502.00 approved oils online, anywhere. Including the VW website. Anyway, here is the list she sent:

It does not, and not because of that reason.
For example there is no Castrol 0W40 or Mobil1 0W40 which actually have much better properties at high temperatures then Castrol 5W40.
But then, on the list is Mobil1 ESP 5W30 with lower HTHS.
Anyway, there is NO WAY VW can win argument in the court that if you use Mobil1 0W40 they can void your warranty, especially because both Castrol and M1 0W40 have VW approval.
So basically, my wife's Tiguan which I still put M1 ESP 5W30 is OK but my CC (if it was under factory warranty) would not be bcs in the engine is M1 0W40.

I emailed Castrol and asked whether their 0-40 (which has the 502.00 on their label) if it was ok to use. They replied that only a special oil available from the VW dealer was good to go.

I find it peculiar that the list of approved oils is not available on the VW website, or anywhere else on line, that I could find.

I wonder if a restraint of trade violation is what is really going on?

I think a great deal of confusion is what's really going on. If it were me, and the oil were approved, I'd use it. Specifically up here, I'd be running to get the Castrol 0w-40 since that's the best deal of approved oils available (only one in 5 L jugs up here and on rollbacks on occasion).

See the list I just posted. Castrol 0-40 is not an officially approved oil.

What would that be? Better cold start? Meeting MB 229.5 (unlike that special oil in VW dealership that meets only MB229.3 which means more deposits) so less deposits and less work for them=less money?
Castrol 0W40 is better in every category then that SPECIAL oil in dealership which is Castrol 5W40 with 13% NOACK.
Also, Castrol 0W40 is approved in Europe and carries VW 502.00 for American market.

I know the combination of viscosity AND spec level is important most of the time. When I looked this car up on my system it only gave 5w-40 502.00 as the fixed interval oil choice even though there are 10w-40's, 5w-30's and 0w-40's with the 502.00 approval.

The Mercedes 5.3 AMG engine requires 229.5 AND 0w-40/5w-40 even though there are 0w-30's with the 229.5 approval, so spec approvals are obviously not the only thing to pay attention to.

Sure, but problem here is that VW is using 5W40 in the dealership (which is IMO horrible oil) and OP (as i do too) is using 0W40.
Now I would really like to know why 5W40 is better then 0W40, especially because 0W40 has better cold cranking abilities and has same viscosity at working temps.
