Dear Jacob,

Audi, which sells cars with precisely the same engine (1.8 Turbo) has an oil advisory on their website. You can down load the whole list from there, which lists many oils not on the one you mention. The Audi website specifically states that you can use 0-40 that meets the VW 502.00. There are several 0-40’s that have the VW502.00. Also, in my owner’s manual, it states that I can use any weight of oil suitable for my climate and driving habits as long as it meets the VW502.00. Would you like to list the climates 0-40 is not suited for? So, are you going to issue an addendum to all the VW owner’s manuals?

It would be interesting to hear an engineer from VW say why an oil that meets the VW502.00 in the weight of 0-40 (which flows better at low temperature) is unsuitable for use.

Please be advised that a copy of this letter, and the Audi information, and the conversation with VW online is available for public reading on bobistheoilguy.com.
Perhaps you would like to go that site and explain why whenever an oil becomes available at regular car parts stores, it suddenly is no longer on your list?

Sincerely,

Jack N. Atherton

Reference # 814014822

Dear Mr. Atherton,

Thank you for your patience while my colleague and I looked into your concerns with the oil for your Passat.

We confirmed that, as it is not on the approved list of oils for VW vehicles provided in TSB 17 14 04, using the oil with a viscosity rating of 0-40 you purchased could potentially hamper your Passat’s performance, or even lead to engine damage. As this would be considered an outside influence, we would not be able to cover any damage found to be the result of inappropriate oil usage under warranty.

I understand you have been having some difficulty finding oils in your area which meet our specifications, so I spoke with Lithia VW of Reno. They confirmed that their parts department carries oil which is healthy for your car’s engine, and can even run your VIN to show you which would be best to use.

You can give them a call at (775) 852-3300.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel welcome to reply to this email, or to give me a call at (800) 822-8987.

I wish you many miles of fun, carefree driving.

Sincerely,

Jacob M.

Can you please write an e-mail to Mobil and Castrol, paste this and ask for their explanation!

What I mean is a 5w-40 will have a thicker, and therefor a naturally stronger oil film when cold than a 0w-40. A 0w-40 will not protect the engine better when cold, it just flows slightly better.

As the oil pump, filter and oil ways are already primed full of oil due to the pump and filters anti-drain design, oil is instantly supplied to bearings whether using a 5w-40 or a 0w-40.

Anyway, OP why don't you get Pennzoil Euro 5w40 from Amazon? Get the $10 Pennzoil rebate while you are at it.

There are zero Pennzoil products on the list.

I seriously do not understand what you trying to say.
So why for example, when I used 5W40 always had rattling noise coming from camshaft assembly, but when using 0W40 I do not have? Then we could use 10W40 or 15W40.
Also, problem is that 5W40 that VW uses in the U.S. in dealerships is several levels below M1 0W40 and Castrol 0W40. It cannot meet MB 229.5 (only 229.3), it has NOACK of 13% and unlike 0W40 both M1 and Castrol we do not know what is HTHS of that oil.
I used some time Castrol 5W40 in my previous car, Passat 1.8T 2005, and after 4000 miles would get knocking noise from valve lifters. That NEVER, NEVER happened with Castrol 0W30 which I mostly used, but also M1 0W40 and Pennzoil 5W40 that I used several times. All those oils I run until 8K and never heard anything from engine.

VW Russia have issued TSBs recommending Castrol Prof A3 0W-30 for all 1.8t and 2.0t engines due to field issues at low temperatures.

There is no issue with using 0W-40 502 oils in the 1.8T engine. Personally in the US I would be happy with a 5W-40, lower VI treat and a higher base oil viscosity.

FWIW. The current edge 5W-40 A3/B4 has a noack of 11%

The issue is that VW does not have it on their approved list.

I just bought the last quart of oil available (other than at a dealership) that VW says is suitable for my Passat available in Reno Nevada. NAPA store on Glendale in Reno had one quart left. Valvoline Full Synthetic SynPower European Formula MST 5-40. They were selling a 5-40 Weight on their European shelf, which claimed the VW Spec (502 etc.) But, that oil was not on the list.

VW who? This thread has rambled on so long I have forgotten the exact issue, but a conversation with a rep, an e-mail, a letter, or even a list they publish of approved oils isn't definitive you realize. The specification is however, and which bottles of oil say they meet that spec. That's all that matters. CSRs don't know everything and lists change/get out of date. But a specification and an oil meeting that spec do not.

You sure are stuck on that list.

Not really. An oil bottle (from a reputable manufacturer) that says it meets the spec is what matters.

Are you supposed to go find and download some list every time you change oil? No of course not. You're supposed to read your owner's manual, find out what kind of oil is required, and then go buy an oil that meets those requirements. Those lists are conveniences only despite what "VW" might say.

VW only makes the list available at the dealer, so you're supposed to go there and get the latest list, then buy some oil.

Nonsense. Oil specifications are printed on data sheets and oil bottles, too. VW/Audi in North America has been, historically, pretty clueless about what oils to use. If you buy an approved oil today, according to bottle specs and data sheet, and then VW dumps them or they dump VW the next day and it's no longer on the list, are you supposed to throw the oil away?

This thread is ridiculous already. Grab an oil that has the approval required and use it. The CSRs are clearly following a script from which they cannot deviate thanks to lack of expertise.

Agreed. If you read the owner's manual, there is no clear prohibition from using 0w-40 grades if it carries VW 502.00 spec. And a manufacturer can't possibly require the owner to go chasing some secret oil lists that are only available at the dealer. If you're following the owner's manual, you're golden. And should VAG ever give you warranty problems as a result, every attorney in the country will be happy to back you up on it.

Either you're joking or delusional. Please clarify which one.

That right there is all you need to know. Please don't tell me you thought different, and ran around Nevada trying to find an oil that was on the list.

Quote:
Please refer to the specific Vehicle Owner’s Manual, published Technical Bulletins and Fluid Capacity Charts to select the appropriate oil required for each Volkswagen vehicle. The sample list attached are products generally available in the North American market that meet the Volkswagen Oil Quality Standard VW 502 00/505 00/505 01 and VW 504 00/507 00 specification at the time of this publication.
