Went to get in the GF 2014 VW Jetta, started it up and noticed half the display in the gauge cluster wasn't on...also the fuel level was at empty, but no low fuel warning light. Half of the display did turn back on after a minute of driving but the fuel gauge (its an electric display, not an actual analog gauge) remained on empty (no bars) for the rest of the drive. What could cause this? A bad fuel level sensor? I told her to take it to the dealer if it remained off.

This car is still under the two year 24k warranty?
Take it to the dealer and get it looked at NOW.

Yep - dealer.
Some fuel gauges have smoothing nowadays not sure it that is one of them or not.

It should have a 3 year/36k warranty. If it does it again I'd take it in. My aunts 2013 Beetle has a weird gauge, it has an actual needle gauge but isn't accurate the first 1/2 of the tank. At 115 miles after filling up it reads 7/8 of a tank. According to that it should be able to go 920 miles per tank. It does about 520 miles per tank. As it goes it gets more reliable.

Yes, once the rest of the screen popped up it said that it had 178 miles until empty.

Welcome to VW and their electrical quirks. Definitely go to the dealer if it's under warranty and get the issue logged, it likely won't be the last and having a history of electrical problems logged with the dealer could go a long way to getting them fixed for free in the future.

Actually it is not the norm anymore on VW cars, you might be unlucky, things do happen, I've owned many late model VW products and have NEVER had an electrical problem, other than burned out bulbs.
