Anyone here have any direct experience with the new VW Atlas or recent generation Toureg? I am looking to replace a ~5 year old Range Rover which has been very good, but I don't want to tempt fate too much longer.... Thanks in advance all.

I like the look of the Atlas, but I suspect it will be a VW built to a cost, whereas the Touareg is built to a standard.

I've heard that the plastics used in the interior of Atlas are prone to easy scratches. This comment came from Humble Mechanic on YouTube, he was a VW tech that participated in a technician day with VW focused on the new Atlas. His point was that if warranty repairs are involving removal of interior trim pieces, the VW service techs must exercise more care to avoid scratching the plastics...from this observation, I would wonder if the real world ownership experience will show the same?
VW Atlas is going to be a good value, on a $$ per pound basis. What corners where cut to achieve this? I've only seen one in person at a VW lot, and it was after hours; I only saw the outside.

The wife and i are actually looking at the Atlas for our next vehicle. Here's a very comprehensive review...
I prefer it to the Touareg.

I'd go with a Honda Pilot. I'm not impressed with how VW has been building cars and treating customers over the years.

My personal experience with VW is never, ever buy the first year or generation of anything. Especially do not ever take it to the stealership, that is the path of wailing and gnashing of teeth.
And I'm saying this as a VW enthusiast! I just completed my Golf's second timing belt and it has been trouble-free for the 11 years/330k km I've driven it since new.

Exactly. I'd opt for the EX with 6-speed A/T. Not too keen on the 9-speed.

Does it have to be a VW? There are so many more reliable, large SUV's than these two. Of course, we don't know what the Atlas' reliablity will be, but based on VW's of the past....

The outback is a nice vehicle, especially in the 3.6R...but I wouldn't put it in the same class as a Atlas or a Pilot. Huge size difference.
I've looked at both, and I'm a Toureg fan. The Atlas was built using Germany's idea of "what Americans want", which never really translates well.
I know that you are looking for something new, but coming from a Range Rover I would be looking at a certified lease return Porsche Cayenne or Audi Q7.

RR to a VW? Yes... I always wanted a new RR and now clicked that box. I really enjoy it, but my DD is primarily a tool, an implement for transportation of me, the family and stuff. It gets dirty and the seats get sticky as only young children do...and it drives me nuts. Plus as nice is the RR's are, not sure I can justify the price of one again for what is, for me, a tool. That said, I want something w/ some style/character and have always leaned to European cars, despite having several Grand Cherokees before the RR.
The Atlas also strikes me as efficient space wise; a large, squarish vehicle that has an open interior. Also, I like the visibility of a box on box. Much as I like the style of a number of current vehicles, e.g the Evoque, small Lexus, they have large blind spots.

Am I imagining things or does the Touareg share structure with the Cayenne?
I saw a couple of Atlas on the lot when I got my Jetta recently, and what struck me the most is how big it is...it seems bigger and taller then most SUVs.
While it is a new design, it's coming out of the Chattanooga plant where Passats are born, how bad can it be? Range Rovers aren't exactly paragons of reliability either, so if it has quirks the OP will feel right at home.

Mazda CX-9 is supposed to win this class according to C&D, looks like it may have blind spot issues though. A Durango looks pretty sharp too, and can tow if you need that.

the Touareg will be more off-road worthy and it's only a 5-passenger vehicle. It won't have VW's media connect (Carplay/AA/Mirrorlink). The 4Motion on the Touareg is Torsen-based, versus Haldex 5 on the Atlas.
