Looks like this thread is drifting off-topic.

I agree with Willy_G. I find the whole VW oil spec thing a turnoff. Somebody on another thread suggested that Honda Z1 spec ATF exists because of an inferior transmission design. Could this be also true for VW?

I've been saying that for a long time, it's a JOKE that VW has this many oil specs. It's out of control. These German car makers need to get a grip and stop releasing OIL SPECS FOR THE MONTH.

Mori, what say you?

I would think that any mfg that puts the timing chain on the transmission side of the engine, no radiator petcock drain, and weirdo specs on the oil would specify something that only their dealers recommend, no?
VAG is just typical german - our way or the highway. I ignore their specs, along with MB and other non-standard mfg. recommendations. Let them try to void my warranty and they'll get a lawsuit.

Why do you buy their cars? So you get a chance to sue them?

I can't help but think that VW is desperatly trying to fix the
sludging problems in some of their vehicles by changing
the oil spec rather than directly addressing the issue with
engine design changes and a larger sump capacity.

Some of these engines have less than 4 qt sump capacities
and a turbo.

Heck GM did it with the Vette, why not VW?
