I just picked up a 2009 Road King with the 103 ci engine. I have seen the advise on the forum to use Valvoline VR 1 in the twin cam engines but wondered if it was advisable to use in the larger engine.

You sure it's a 103 engine? the 09's came with the 96...
Is it a replacement or hopped up engine?

Are you talking about the Valvoline VR1 dino or Synthetic Oil?

Either way, I've run AMsoil, Schaffers 7000, HD Syn3 oil, Mobil 1 v-twin in my Harleys. I have some Redline waiting at home to try in July. Never had any issues with any of them in the bike.

I run synthetic becuase I feel it disipates heat better, and doesn't expand and contract on the dipstick depending if it's cool or hot. You have to be careful not to overfill you bike. If oil starts coming out the air filter assembly you've overfilled it...even by as little as 1/2 quart..

Not from what the UOA's say. The dino VR1 is outperforming or matching the synthetics in wear numbers.

Any oil 15-50 or 20-50 oil will be fine in your bike. Change it every 5k and don't worry about it. I have a 95ci 100hp that is running Rotella 5-40. Top end is quieter than with 20-50. My oil temperature runs around 230 but stuck in traffic I have seen close to 300 so I run synthetic oil. I know someone that has only ran Walmart 20-50 dino and Walmart filters for over 70k. Buy what you want and ride.

The black bottle is synthetic, but the silver bottle is dino. The Dino version is what most HD people on here reccomend. A UOA of Kendall GT1 20w50, which is the racing oil (they only make a 20w50 in racing formula) did almost as well, having only a little less TBN.

The oil I was looking at was the dino version of the VR1. I bought a year old police Road King which comes with the 103 ci engine.

Silver bottle VR1 20W50 is what most use. very good oil at a decent price.
