Y'all:

I've been using Voltaren for 4 or 5 years now. I use it for arthritis in my right elbow and recently my left knee. The stuff works fast and it works well!

I usually buy the large tooth paste-sized tubes at Walgreens or Target. On the tube it says "Made in Canada".

My left knee has been bothering me a lot this winter so I had Sue buy a multi-tube package at Costco. The Costco multi-pack has two large tubes and one small tube.

I noticed the outer "retail box" had India as the COO but the tubes inside were packaged in un-named generic white boxes. Strangely the large tubes had no COO, but the small tube had Canada as the COO.

Weird thing is, the Indian made stuff seems thicker than the Canadian made stuff. Also too, the Canadian made product has a stronger smell than the Indian made stuff. In other words, the Indian made product seems different than the Canadian made product. All I know is that after using the stuff for years the Canadian made product works.

Besides the labeling being a bit lacking, if not deceptive (to me at least), there seems to be a difference in the product itself. I'm having Sue return it to Costco. Hopefully the stuff sold at Walgreens and Target is still made in Canada.

FWIW,

Scott

My wife was prescribed Voltaren a few years ago for some arthritis. Worked quickly and was effective. Bought a tube of the generic and it clearly did not work as well. Have no idea where it was made.

My wife and I use it sparingly for many years. I liked it a lot better when it was Rx only as it only cost me a small copay. My Rx insurance will no longer cover it. OTC only. CVS thinks it's made of helium-3. We've also tried the generics and thought they weren't as effective. I believe that Ibuprofen is one of the main ingredients.

After using Voltaren in prescription form as well as various versions OTC (brand name, Walmart/Costco/Medline generic) they all seemed fairly similar overall. Awhile back I decided to look for something possibly more effective trying BioFreeze, IcyHot as well as a few others and after choosing Absorbine Jr. Pro roll-on (lidocaine/phenol) I doubt I'll ever go back to Voltaren or anything else.

Not trying to derail this thread, but that stuff is by far the most effective/longest lasting topical treatment I've found. In the past 20+ yrs I've been dealing with 3 ruptured tendons (2 complete/surgically reattached), rotator cuff tendonitis in both shoulders as well as long term inflammation/stiffness in the neck from cryptococcal meningitis. We all have various levels of pain/threshold, expectations, that sort of thing and between that lidocaine/ice pack I get by every day without feeling the need to resort to the dark(er) side of pain mgt. Good luck!

Some I bought a couple of years ago was made in Israel both the generic and brand name. I have not seen that lately. Checking at Walmart yesterday the name brand was "Active ingredient made in India, and further processed in Canada" and the store brand made in India. Amazon has a slightly cheaper generic called "Curist" also made in India, but the inactive ingredients are clearly different from Equate as it has a different texture and smell.

The chain drug stores are about the worst place to buy OTC medicine.
