Two basic Fram EG filters from my MX-5 ...
The little 2.0L Skyactive engine runs very clean. I have a catch-can on it and even after 11k miles, there's no appreciable accumulation in the can. The filters have no discernable particulate matter in the pleat folds.

This first photo has both sitting side-by-side.
Filter on left has 6k miles on it; used PZ Ultra 5w-20.
Filter on right has 11k miles on it; used HPL 5w-30.

Closeup of 6k mile filter; the media pleat spacing is bad; really bad - all around the filter the pleats varied in spacing.
However, the media itself was really firm and strong; probably a benefit to a short height and steel tube.
Silicone ADBV was pliable and properly functioning. BP valve was seated well and seemed fine as well.
The fiber end caps were still very strongly adhered to the media and showed no sign whatsoever of any failure or compromise in function.
Despite the horrible appearance, the filter did its job just fine.

This is a closeup of the 11k mile filter.
Pretty much the same observations ... bad spacing that had no consequences detected. And the ADBV and BP also looked fine.

Here are some photos of the residual oil from the catch can after 11k miles ...
I think there is a reasonable conclusion to be made that the Mazda PCV oil baffle (on the side of the crankcase) does a really good job to stop oil getting up to the intake, as witnessed by the very, very low volume of stuff that came out after draining for about 3 minutes (caught on a paper towel). In all honesty, if I knew the PCV system worked this well, I probably would not have spent the money on the catch can. But it's there now, and the only way to know is to test stuff. Gotta pay to play!

Looks good. Never have been drawn to the standard Fram filters, but the few times I have used them, no issues.

I am curious about using the EG Frams...
I generally buy the XG Frams and run them 2 or 3 5K OCIs. Looks like you are OK with the std Frams.
Your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Why did you use those cheap filters and then go 11k miles on one?
They are rated for 10k miles.
I like to experiment; push the envelope and shatter notions of mediocrity, etc ...
I see no indication of performance being compromised, despite the heresy of overrunning their rated duration of use.

If it makes you feel any better, I just put an Ultra on there. But I also intend to run about 25k+ miles using HPL ... so the heresy continues!

OG ultra?

The first HPL run (from 10k to 21k miles on the car) was during my cross-country Four Corners tour. This run was just to normalize the engine to the HPL; wasn't intended for an extended OCI. That the EG filter made it for 11k miles is proof that they are capable of what they claim, under the right conditions. Clearly the filter did its job and didn't fail, regardless of how despised the EG is to some folks.

As I said, I put on an Ultra (OG style) starting this current HPL run; planning on running as far as the UOAs will indicate.

Thank you as always OP.

Crazy Bills Garage on YT is one of the channels I have been watching the past few months. Its a gold mine of cut opens. He is slow and talkative, but my take away (from what I've already seen here in this post and countless others over the years) is Fram orange cans are excellent value filters. He has done several virgin cut opens, and some others. I believe he works at an oil change shop and has access to the recycling area.

Have used them in the past. Never any issues. FWIW the Fram was by far the heaviest filter I have used that fit the Toyota 2.7L

Looks like the end of the center tube isn't protruding beyond the ID of the end cap, so I'd predict that there's a 100% sealing ring impression from the leaf spring on the end cap.
