Two basic Fram EG filters from my MX-5 ...
The little 2.0L Skyactive engine runs very clean. I have a catch-can on it and even after 11k miles, there's no appreciable accumulation in the can. The filters have no discernable particulate matter in the pleat folds.
This first photo has both sitting side-by-side.
Filter on left has 6k miles on it; used PZ Ultra 5w-20.
Filter on right has 11k miles on it; used HPL 5w-30.
Closeup of 6k mile filter; the media pleat spacing is bad; really bad - all around the filter the pleats varied in spacing.
However, the media itself was really firm and strong; probably a benefit to a short height and steel tube.
Silicone ADBV was pliable and properly functioning. BP valve was seated well and seemed fine as well.
The fiber end caps were still very strongly adhered to the media and showed no sign whatsoever of any failure or compromise in function.
Despite the horrible appearance, the filter did its job just fine.
This is a closeup of the 11k mile filter.
Pretty much the same observations ... bad spacing that had no consequences detected. And the ADBV and BP also looked fine.
Here are some photos of the residual oil from the catch can after 11k miles ...
I think there is a reasonable conclusion to be made that the Mazda PCV oil baffle (on the side of the crankcase) does a really good job to stop oil getting up to the intake, as witnessed by the very, very low volume of stuff that came out after draining for about 3 minutes (caught on a paper towel). In all honesty, if I knew the PCV system worked this well, I probably would not have spent the money on the catch can. But it's there now, and the only way to know is to test stuff. Gotta pay to play!
