Viscosity Grade recommendation for Death Valley

So what's the deal? Is this PEA the stuff that does the cleaning the best? How much and how often?

I bought 3 cans of the Gumout with PEA, and 3 bottles of Techron.

If you always use a Top Tier fuel then you really don’t need to be using this stuff very often if at all. I haven’t used any fuel system cleaners in my Corvette ever and it’s at 60,500 miles now. I bought my Civic with 80k on it and now have 150k and haven’t used it there either. I always use Top Tier fuel in both cars

I remove and clean the radiator and flush the coolant before each trip out west.

The engine oil stays the same: a 5W40 Euro spec that meets 229.5 and A40.

... I've used a lot of Redline SI-1

Have you ever had any bad experiences with it?

I once added a full bottle of Redline SI-1 Fuel system cleaner (PEA) to a full tank of one my cars right before the oil change.

The directions on my bottle (~7 Yrs old) doesn't say add before or after filling the tank. It just says add the entire bottle to the fuel tank. Also doesn't say anything about adding it to a full tank or changing the oil afterwards ...

But based on my research, I found out that I had to add it to a full tank and change oil after the tank is empty.

You may say so what?
That's where it gets interesting!

I added the bottle after I got home with a full tank (short drive from gas station). Car sat overnight and next day, I had a hard time starting it. It took a few tries and finally it started with the loudest backfire. Not kidding you!

Never ever before or after this one time event, I had an issue with starting or any backfires. The car was in a tip-top shape.

Was this a coincidence? idk, odds are against it. My friend told me that I should have added it to an empty tank and then fill it up. Or fill it up and then add or drive around to mix it up. None of these suggestions and/or requirements are listed on the bottle. Not even adding it to a full tank!

I had also purchased 2 boxes of Chevron Techron from Costco about 20 or 24 bottles.

After this backfire event, I stopped dumping the whole bottle and every once in a while, I pure a little (like 2 or 3 table spoon) to my full tanks until I run out.

I am now on my last 2 bottles. One bottle of Redline SI-1 and one bottle of Chevron Techron left. And will NEVER buy these stuff again!

I am with @Patman! I already use top tier gas from Chevron or Shell (92 Octane, sometimes 89) and never had any fuel or injection issues.

Let's start a new discussion. :ROFLMAO: Waiting for people to say waste of $ getting 92 Octane ... Yes, I've read many of those threads but prefer 92! :alien: I can feel the difference in my Tacoma. It's much perkier going uphill.

Just wondering, what’s the unit of measurement for this “perkiness that you can feel the difference”? How do you tell if it’s only one perky extra or ten? Are your perkiness units the same amount as what others experience?

I had a super super "perky" girlfriend in college!

After her, was all downhill.

All downhill? I guess I could start using xW-20! 🔥 :ROFLMAO:

Never experienced any problems. With my car or truck, I add the bottle at the gas station, then fill-up the tank. On my motorcycles, I fill-up, ride a short distance home, add the appropriate amount of cleaner, then bounce the front suspension to mix it up.

As anyone ever used this stuff extensively, (say a couple of cans or bottles), ran it through, then had an oil analysis done? If so what changed?

I'm sure that in 99% of the usage of these type of products, few, if any get their oil changed afterward. I couldn't find anywhere on the bottle where the manufacturer of the product even says to do that.

I'm not saying you guys are wrong, I just wondered what, if anything it did to the oil? You don't want to wind up with a cure that's worse than the disease.

After my backfire experience (refer to my post #346), I think the only impact is to your wallet. lol Seriously!

Your post is definitely enlightening. I've used this stuff before. (Usually dumping in a can, then filling all the way). I never experienced anything positive or negative. And this is the first I heard about changing the oil afterward.

To be perfectly honest with you, I have absolutely no idea if this stuff works either way. Like 95+% of these type of additives and products, the consumer has no way of honestly knowing if it works or not.

Most of this is all placebo effect..... "Hell, it must be working, because I spent $10 bucks on this crap!"..... Except in your case, when you had issues with backfiring, that were most likely traceable to using this stuff..

I believe that low speed pre ignition exists, because there is provable evidence of it. (Like the video I posted). I also believe that poorly performing fuel injectors are the root cause of it.

But if this stuff keeps your injectors properly fogging the fuel, instead of spraying it in a stream, I have absolutely no idea.

i do too in my country, use 100 octane but gas in south europe sucks big time even the so called 100 octane.many injectors and fuel filters are going to trash bcs of that.
Liquimoly DI Jectron
i always thought this is for injectors:
what is the difference with yours since you know LM products so well?

i think LM says on the label to add it then add fuel and make a long trip with high speed.
So once or twice a year for a $10 additive is too much?
once a year is enough i think.every 10-20.000 km..i know some vw have the same bad injectors like mine -bmw .its not the cost,i think if its gonna work these km are ok.

The DI version is for injectors as well but it contains PEA which is supposed to help with the carbon deposits specifically around DI injectors in the combustion chamber, that's the only difference. Certainly doesn't help with carbon build up on the back of intake valves in GDI engines....nothing helps that but a physical cleaning at some point which is just a maintenance item if you keep your vehicle long enough...catch cans, low-NOACK...all of it...does zero in my opinion to curtail this issue....just have to accept that you need to spend a few bucks to physically remove the carbon at some point.
