I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know if the last name Ford is common in Virginia? while most of my ancestry is French/Acadian/Canadian, I came upon a grandfather of mine, Louis Duhe (later changed to Duet, pronounced Do-ay) who married a Ford woman from Virginia. I do have her full name. Is there any place I could call to get birth or marriage records in the state of Virginia?

There are some where I grew up in Gloucester county. Not many.. but there were some Ford families there.

In that area Diggs, Belvin, Hogge are the most common last names.

It's a fairly common name.

To get the birth/marriage records, you would have to contact the county in which they were married.

You might consider joining Ancestry.com. I've gone back 8 generations on Ancestry, and they've got the birth certificates, marriage licenses, census results, entry/exit records*, and death certificates quite far back.

*In the days of Ocean Liners, records were kept of citizens entering and exiting the country at every port of entry or border. My great grandfather traveled to England often as part of his business. He used to sail on Cunard lines. Archived records for every border crossing exist. So, for example, he arrived 4 August, 1914 on the Mauretania.
