Up on the workbench today is a Hengst H97W07, which Hengst lists as a cross for Toyota 90915-YZZN1. I am cutting a slew of filters to compare to the Wix WL10332 that I was thoroughly disappointed with for a variety of reasons, but primarily, poorly formed louvers.

The Hengst H97W07 is 2.89 in (73.5 mm) tall which taller than the Toyota 90915-YZZN1 and the Wix WL10332 by 1/4" on the Wix and 3/16" over the Toyota.

The can feels exceptionally well made, and the box is labeled MADE IN POLAND, Overall the filter weighs 231.0 g. Baseplate has 8 punched holes with no evidence of any burrs on the ADBV side, the baseplate weighed 96.5 g. Can thickness was the thickest I've measured so far and was found to be 0.0265 in thick. The ADBV is black but feels very pliable (possible not nitrile), not sure what material it is constructed from and Hengst's site gave no ADBV material information for this filter, it also lists the micron rating that I could find. The filter is constructed with The bypass valve located in the dome end, its setpoint is not advertised, and the valve is constructed of a 0.153 in thick semi rigid rubber disc sealing on metal with no visible light leaks. The BV opening is 7/16" in diameter. The filter core weighed 72.4 g, was 2 1/8 in tall, had 72 pleats, with a media length of 71 in, and a media thickness of 0.0215 in and used a metal crimped seam. The media is supported on each end by a metal end cap with no light leaks noted at the potting material, and no glue residue was present on the endcaps or elsewhere in the filter media. The center tube uses a formed and folded seam perforated tube with well formed holes that were all even with no burrs noted.

The only downsides I can fault this filter with would be the lack of published efficiency data, the lack of a silicon ADBV, and relative scarcity. I purchased this example from Rock Auto. Otherwise, it has by far the thickest can, heaviest base plate, most uniform construction, most pleats and filter media, and (in my opinion) the best BV design I've yet examined. Strong contender if you're in need of a filter for which this application fits!

Give it the burn test. White smoke is silicone, and black smoke is nitrile. It's most likely not silicone.

It looks like a good design and good quality construction. Too bad the efficiency specs can't be found.

$9.20 on Amazon with one day shipping. Not excessive in today’s prices. Of course when I get it tomorrow I’ll have a better look at how old it looks. Probably going to use it next week on a car. The Boss can wait another year, don’t know about the other contenders waiting in line. But every day brings a new dawn on which oil filter?

Purchased from Rock Auto I paid $4.40 plus tax and shipping minus the 5% discount.

Hengst make nice oil filters, I use the Hengst H97W05 for my Mitsubishi Outlander. My local Napa I believe have new old stock Hengst oil filters and the filters I purchase are from Poland.

Of all the filters I've cut so far in this size, the Hengst is the one that has impressed me the most. Maybe instead of Napa having NOS, these sizes are simply made in Poland? I have no way to know, just posing it as a possibility.

It's possible, My first time using a Hengst oil filter on asian vehicle's, I used Hengst in the past on Audi and BMW and had great results.

Nothing to indicate any sort of date code I could decipher. Just 064 and that's all.
6th week of 2024?

The H97W05 I have been getting from RA are also made in Poland. Last batch was 263 - so 26th week of 2023 I am guessing. The batch before that was also Poland - but I don;t recall the number.

I will likely order a few soon. Guess I will see.

I just took apart one of these. Wow I am impressed. ADBV is rubber. If it weren’t for the rubber at the pressure relief valve and ABDV which could break down over time in storage, I would be willing to stock up on a decade’s worth of future oil changes.
