Purolator list 2 oil filter for the 2 available engines in the Vibe. The 1ZZ engine list L14476 and L14477 for the 2ZZ. The L14477 looks the same just a little longer. Purolator is the only one to list 2 filters. I'm not sure why they do, but the longer filter should be completely interchangable on the 1ZZ right?

What's funny is that the 2ZZ is higher output but list the same air filter.

The specs are the same just the 2ZZ filter is about 1/2 inch longer. I don't think there would be any clearqance issues.

If no physical clearance issues, then run the longer filter. I always run the larger filter that will fit.

Even if a filter fits, make sure it isn't more vulnerable to damage. I ran a Pf 52 in place of the PF 47 on my Grand Am, but it had an engine mount to protect it.

Yeah true but the longer filer is speced on the 2-ZZ motor in the Vibe and I don't think anything was changed or different in the filter mounting to make it fit.

I'm just wondering why 2 filters are listed by Purolator for the 2 engines but everyone else just lists one. ACDelco just list the PF1233 for both engines. I guess maybe the other filter manufacturers are just listing the shorter filter for both engines.

What's the OEM list? ... two different filters? If so, sometimes the aftermarket makers follow suit because they think there is a fitment clearance issue. That's how it was for my Nissan, who listed the long filter for the 4 banger and a short filter for the V6.

Well, the V-6 has a coolant-to-oil cooler on the filter mount and the 4 banger doesn't. Therefore, Nissan thinks it takes a shorter filter to fit, probably due to the cooler eating up some room, but the longer filter fits just fine. I think the engineers where missing the boat the day they decided how long the filter could be.

Is the V-6 a newer design? At one time I was changing oil on my 77 LUV with a 1.8 liter 4 and a huge PF 1177, a 90 Baretta with the Tech 4 and a PF 52, and a 92 Grand Am with a PF 47 on an HO quad 4. The newer the engine, the more highly stressed, and smaller the filter.

Also filters smaller on the outside may still have as much or more media, and better media. Not all filters are crammed full of the best media.

What does the OEM specify is a good question.

VQ35 was in Altimas in 2002 and beyond. It's only 245 HP ... pretty typical for 3.5 & 4.0 liter V6s of the last decade.

I think the VQ30 predecessor was out many years before that.

I think in the case of the Altimas, it was the fact that the V6 had the oil cooler is why they decided to put the shorter filter on for clearance reasons. But like I said, I've used the longer filter and it fits fine without hitting any thing. I doubt there was any other reason besides that for the shorter filter being specified by the factory.

You have to figure OE must list 2 filter or Purolator wouldn't list 2. I'm not sure what Toyota list for the 2 engines in the Matrix, but AC Delco which is sort of OE lists the PF1233 for both engines for both the Vibe and the Matrix as do the rest of the filter manufacturers. I think it is the shorter one but not sure. I figure someone has some info about 1ZZ and 2ZZ filter for vibe/matrix/corolla etc.

Toyota does list different filters, FO-1 for the 1ZZ and FO-10 for the 2ZZ. I'm not sure why they do that, but that's probably why purolator offers 2 filters. Anyway the Purolator filters seem the same and I doubt there would be a clearance issue.

OK thanks. I haven't tried fitting the longer filter yet. Toyota should've just speced the longer filter for both engines. If you go with anyone else besides Purolator I think you are getting the shorter filter for both engines.
