I was in my local Canadian Tire Store having winter tires put on my Cavalier. As I had a afir amount of time to kill, I naturally went over to the oil section and read lots of bottles.

I was looking at a brand-new bottle of Quaker State 'Ultimate Durabilty' 'Horsepower' synthetic. On the back of the bottle, it says (paraphrasing) 'QS-UD-HP offers the most protection of any synthetic oil*'

If you look below, the '*' part sets out the following two things: a) based on the sequence IVA test; and b) of 5W-50 synthetic oils.

I found this really interesting, as it means their claim for their syn oil is based on testing a grade that is hardly used in the NA marketplace! It also severely narrows down how many oils it competes against - Castrol, M1, and maybe Roush Racing. PP could go on that list, but it alrady a SOPUS product.

If you look on a bottle of the dino version of QS, it makes the same statement, but says based on the 5w30 grade. So for regular oil, they test a mainstream grade, but for the syn, they test an almost unused grade!

I found this weird, and bit mis-leading.

In marketing you can get away with bloody murder. I mean Castrol sells a synthetic that is Conventional oil, and Quaker State says theirs is best because they challenged other and they refused, which means they are better by default.

And the others are?

Is that 5-50 the ferrari factory fill? Prob 100% "lab" synthetic basestocks ... Shouldnt be promoted on a completely different product. Time to go in front of the NAB again.

Yeah, that's misleading marketing tactics at their best.

We should all pretty much ignore any marketing statements, as they provide no valid information to an informed buyer.

You think wild claims are made on oil bottles: try the back of cereal boxes. I wonder why nobody ever complains about beer and wiskey claims. If that scottish guy was selling Bud LIght I bet nobody would [censored] so much.Just me thinking out loud.

The euro 5w40 is the ferrari FF. You can get it here from a distributor but it is $72 a case.

Regardless of the cleaning ability I believe all synthetic offers good cleaning properties but wether one cleans better over the other does it really matter??? QS is good oil all around and have used it with no problems on my end. If I had to choose an one time only usage oil I'd go for any Quaker State Synthetic in the proper weight.

Durango

marketing is a big game.. find the most outlandish claims and back them up with some obscure irrelevant fact or twist of words.
an example.

"Improved Duff Papertowels now hold twice as much water as the leading competitor**"

**When measured with Tritiated water by weight.

Thanks for posting a pic of what I was talking about!

Helps with folks who 'don't believe it 'till they see it'!
