Is their dino gear oil good? I am converting off Royal Purple to use something cheaper and I was gonna get the off-brand stuff for 3.49 a qt, but I went ahead & got the Valvoline dino 80w90 for 5.49 cause I figured it as better.

The cheaper brand was not for LSD, but I was less concerned because this is going in a front diff and it is open. But I still got the Valvoline cause I figured it was better.

Other choices in non-full syn 80w90 were Valvoline Dura-blend, Lucas, Master Pro, Coastal...

I had hoped to find pennzoil or Rotella but no luck...surely this Valvoline is some top-notch dino gear oil? Or should I have spent a buck more for the Dura-blend?

The Valvoline 80W-90 is a decent gear oil. Go ahead and use it.

Valvoline makes solid oils, I was actually looking around for their gear oil when changing my front/rear's on the Xterra but couldn't find anything except Lucas. I hate Lucas, so I drove around some more and finally found Mobil 1 LS Synthetic. Went with a 75w-90 synthetic myself, but their conventional(Valvoline) is top notch stuff.

The Valvoline gear oil is good. The Pennzoil is very good but I have trouble finding it. Here's a tip. Go to a Napa and buy the Napa brand gear oil. It's cheaper than Valvoline and is also made by Valvoline.

I have also been looking around for pennzoil or Rotella gear lubes. I gone to all our local auto stores and farm stores. Nothing. One Walmart actually carried Rotella gear lube, grease, and tractor transmission fluid. I held off buying some because I wasn't quite ready to change the fluids on our tractor. When I was ready, I went back, but they were no longer carrying the products.

I have been wanting to try some Pennzoil synthetic gear lube, but I can't find it. I did find some yellow bottle Pennzoil conventional 80W-90 gear lube. I was surprised because I wasn't looking for it in this particular store. I went to the auto section out of curiosity to see what they had. Guess where it was. This is the ONLY store in which I have seen Pennzoil gear lube in person. Are you ready for this? KMART.

Only way I`ve seen Pennzoil gear lubes for sale is by the pail through a few lube companies.

Another lousy case of marketing on Shell's part. It comes in quarts and it is an extremely good gear oil. I have some in my garage.

Imo,outside of Amsoil,Pennzoil`s gear oils are the best. So I`d say Amsoil and Pennzoil are the two best gear oils out there.

I use the conventional Valvoline 75W90 in the rear differential on my truck, it works great, the gears are quiet and the oil hardly even looks dark after 12,000 miles on it. The rear end has no chipped teeth or other gear problems either.

I saw my Napa store has the syn Valvoline 75W90 now, so I may use it next time so I don't have to change it as often. Valvoline makes great motor oil and gear oil too. I couldn't find Napa brand gear oil in 75W90 though.

Kmart has the Pennzoil gear oils. Thats where I got mine.

Well guys, be advised that due to the fact there is now evidence that dino offers superior protection over any synthetic gear oil, that is why I am going to switch. I am doing some work on the front axle and it needs to be drained so I figured now was the time to switch.

I realize that synthetic gear oils allow for longer service intervals, but I do not mind using dino oil changing it more often for these reasons:

1.) Dino better than full-syn for hypoid gears
2.) 4x4 application and dino is cheaper to use when I have to drain prematurely due to deep water crossings
3.) Dino is less than half the price of syn

O'Reilly used to carry the Pennzoil dino gear oil, but I was not going to hunt all over town so the only "name-brand" 80w90 dino gear oil I found was Lucas or Valvoline. I think Lucas makes good products but the Valvoline was cheaper.

When the time comes for the rear diff, I will probably quit Royal Purple there too and use either Valvoline 85w140 dino or Dura-blend (for cold weather since using the thicker stuff in rear).

I believe in manual trannies which call for gear oil, that synthetic gear oil is superior, but for hypoid gears, even Currie Enterprises recommends dino only.

Ideally I wanted Rotella or Pennzoil but again, this will be drained more often since it is a "weekend warrior" Jeep and any GL5 dino should work as long as it has the LSD additive in it since my rear diff is posi.

Valvoline makes GREAT products. They're my favorite oil/lubricants. Followed by Mobil and QS.

Well in the Amsoil test...the Valvoline scored higher total score than Pennzoil 80w90 dino; although Pennzoil won over Valvoline in certain specific tests.

Lucas full-syn & Royal Purple scored LOWER overall total than both Pennzoil & Valvoline dino!!!
