Valvoline Restore and Protect skepticism

Some may disagree - but I believe I may have created some piston / ring deposit issues in Hyundai / Kia engines running lesser oils such as Quaker State Ultimate Durability , Magnatec and Kendall early in the engine life . As I learned more I moved up to PPPP and Mobil 1 oils but by then I’m sure carbon deposits had already set in . I believe the better Mobil 1 oils I settled on later kept new deposits from forming but can not be expected to clean carbon that was already there . If today someone asked what oil available locally to use in a new engine I would say : PUP , Mobil 1 ESP and Valvoline Restore and Protect . I’ll say again Valvoline Restore and Protect is a smooth running , quiet oil to run producing low wear numbers with great cleaning abilities in engines approved for it - just don’t push OCI mileage with it past 5K miles .

I’ve mentioned it before but Valvoline Restore and Protect helped my Civic’s consumption a lot! It was consuming 1L every 10,000 km and now it’s only consumed 300ml in the last 8000 km. I ran 3 intervals of Valvoline Restore and Protect 0w-20 totaling 18,000 miles and am now running Mobil 1 ESP 0w-20
 
This is part of the claim - all the way back to Ring Free and other marine products - cleaning the ring/ring land interface has been a challenge …

I started the first run of Valvoline Restore and Protect on my Fit just shy of 350k miles. If it can change consumption at this mileage…

Though it’s rather a modest 1 Qt every 4k miles. I figure it can’t hurt giving it a run for a year. :)
 
I posted in the big Valvoline Restore and Protect thread about my 2007 GS350 going from a quart/1000 (worst was a quart/300) miles to not burning at all within two oil changes of 5K each. I'm fortunate that my engine didn't get scoring on the cylinder walls as it was burning heavily from about 80K to 145K miles.
 
How many miles were on your Civic when you began running Valvoline Restore and Protect?

I started the first interval at 157,000 miles. I am the second owner, it had 80,000 miles on it when I bought it and it appears that the original owner did oil changes at the dealer and followed the oil life monitor for the changes. Consumption of 1L every 10,000 km isn’t really that bad (my 2000 Civic consumed way more) but I definitely wanted to see if I could cut that down. I am happy with this new level of consumption because when I buy a 5 quart jug I use 4.5 at the time of the oil change and I will only need another half quart for topping up over a 10,000 mile interval.

Most pictures get deleted because of copyright issues. We can’t afford to get sued by the copyright owner
 
Would it be unreasonable to ask to give the person who posted an explanation?
Most times when it’s deleted there is a note saying that it’s a copyright issue. Occasionally a mod might forget. But there’s no need to get bent out of shape about it. We aren’t doing this to make people mad. It’s for the protection of the site.

Can we drop this issue now and get back on topic?

A reference to many people reacting in a very personal way to moderation - which does feel personal quite often, but isn't, in most cases - would be my guess
 
I’m not sure if it’s still on this forum or if Terry had the full report and just gave us a synopsis about it. It was so long ago. I can’t recall exactly what the base oil blend contained but I just remember it being something that nobody else was using at the time
That sounds about as expected. The sad part , just like many businesses today , the name Castrol means nothing special anymore.
The company actually seemed to lose its way with all sorts of abrupt changes without much advertisement or explanation to the customers even well before it was sold.
 
Valvoline Restore and Protect and low tension ring packs in street engines is the only reason I'm even here on this site. I've not run any Valvoline oils for over 40 years, never been a fan. Always been a Redline Oil & Mobil 1 guy in the past, I was even sponsored by Redline Oil in my drag racing career for many years, then I bought a 2018 Audi Q7 with 84,000 miles on the clock that gobbled a quart of oil in the first 400 miles of ownership. Up until I got it, the dealer had been using the "Audi approved" Castrol Euro 5w-40 changes on it every 10,000 miles on time according to the dealer and CarFax. It was quite obvious to me after the purchase that it was traded in because of the oil gobbling problem, which was because of the known low tension ring pack in the 3.0t CREC engine in some of the Audis starting in 2016 and going thru till 2020. It's a known issue on them, but they can be fixed when it happens by using a Berrymans B12 piston soak, Yamalube Ring Free plus along with the Valvoline Restore and Protect oil. Euro oils do not keep the oil control rings and pistons clean enough on these CREC engines on 90% of them. The guys that tune them and run them hard enough have less problems with the carbon and ring sticking, but thats for another discussion.

Back to Valvoline Restore and Protect, I'm now running it in all of our vehicles even if low mileage like my 5.3 chevy with 40K miles on it, which is also a known ring sticker, and lifter prone problem engine, and my awesome older 2013 A6 with the 3.0t that is a better engine and does't have a low tension ring pack in it. It's never ever used a drop of oil while using Mobil 1 0w-40, yet I still switched it to Valvoline Restore and Protect seeing how well it works in the Q7's 3.0t. So the skeptics can believe whatever they want. I myself could care less what the skeptics run or believe. I've seen it work for many on the Audi & VW forums and witnessed firsthand what the Euro oils have done to cause the rings to stick in the first place, same with the Chevys. Use what ever oil you want to use. I doubt anyone cares, just makes it easier for us guys that want it to see Valvoline Restore and Protect on the shelf.

Bottom line is the other oils make for the stuck oil control ring mess, Valvoline Restore and Protect cleans it up. Valvoline Restore and Protect is very helpful for low ring tension engines to clean & free up oil control rings on these engines, and I also believe engines with problem areas in regard to deposits, sticking lifters, variable cam timing mechanisms that require full flow of oil orifices or that type of thing. There is a real need for this type of oil nowadays with some of these engines. Everyone gets hung up on Dexos or any certs for that matter. All I can say is F those certs, Dexos isn't going to happen with this oil even though it meets it fine, Valvoline isn't going to reveal the secret sauce thats needed for Dexos approvals. And the "certified oil" is causing the stuck rings in the first place on our Euro cars.
