valvoline premium conventional and engine abuse

hello....I own a 2004 mitsubishi eclipse gts with 103,000mi ...I know it is a regular perfomance engine,but i drive the car pretty hard,i do alot of WOT runs daily,just for fun,i like how the engine screams. I've been runing valvoline premium conventional 5w-30 and fram orange can since i got the car back in 2009.
I replace the engine oil every 6 months. (i drive the car like 1500 miles in 6 months).
I want the engine to last as long as possible. So, i want your opinion about the oil that im using in this car. does it Can handle the abuse or not?...thanks.

Sure can. Valvoline is a good dino ditch the orange can of death though.

Your choice of oil is fine. Engine wear is more depended on your driving habits, rather than the brand of oil. As I always tell people, let the engine get up to the appropriate operating temperature before you thrash it, and you can do so all you want when that temp is reached.

Instead of worrying about oil tell us how long you drive normally before going crazy on that engine. Also a good oil pressure or temperature gauge would be a far better investment than oil in your duty cycle.

The above are good comments. Make sure the engine is up to operating temperature before hammering it, and use a better oil filter. Purolator PurOne, Wix, or Fram ToughGard would all be better than a base Fram.

Can't beat Valvoline. Great oil but ditch the Fram. Get a Wix or Napa Gold and use it for a year since you drive it so little.

Valvoline is one of the best oils (search through the uoa`s and you`ll see some of the lowest wear numbers). Fram orange can is perfectly fine,although I prefer the Tough Guard (gray can).

At 1500 mile intervals, just throw a Puro Classic on it. I only even mention it, as it is less expensive than your present filter.

thanks for the replies.

To be honest,sometimes i floor the gas even with the engine cold. Temperature wise, like 1 year ago i replaced the thermostat (maintenance)...i took out the OEM one which is 192 deegres F thermostat. I put a duralast 170 degrees F instead of the OEM one. So,my new thermostat let the engine work colder than before.
Is this harmful to my engine?

I got the 170 because i didn't notice that until i was on the work of replacing it.

There's no harm in hammering it at 170F coolant temperature as long as you let the engine get up to temperature. Also, oil temperature gets up to temperature about 5-10 minutes after coolant temperature, so give a few more minutes after the coolant warms up.

There are suppose to be 14 or so uoas for vwb try and find 2. That is in 2012. Try goggle and find BITOG see how many are there. Who says there are great uoas for vwb???

Yeah the search engine here is really quirky. The way I always do it is "valvoline" in the search bar (always put quotes) and then I blank out the date ranges. Not sure how far back this site archives it's posts though.

I think your current maintenance plan works just fine. VWB is a pretty good oil

I would ditch the orange can! Run a Bosch, Purolatlor or a Wix.

If you wanted to split hairs, a synthetic changed every 5k might be a little better for it. They can take even more abuse without breaking down and usually have better additives. Mobil 1, Pennzoil Ultra, or Synpower would suite your needs just fine.

Agreed. Unless you have a tuner thats advancing the ignition timing, there is no need for a 170 thermostat. It will actually do more harm than good. You need the heat for oil to lubricate properly and it helps burn off contaminates.
