I bought a bunch of valvoline premium blue synthetic 5w40 on sale for my 5.3 to use this summer. What is a good conservative oil change interval? 5000? I do mainly highway driving except for when I hit the lake which I tow a light boat on some country roads.

I usually run the OLM down to 15/20%. Highway is easy on the engine.

5k is easy for a fs hdeo in those conditions. You could double that. I've done long drains in my 5.3 and 6.0 with conventional and some syn blend 15w-40's and my oil consumption didn't increase but went down as even with long intervals the hdeo still cleaned the rings from when I ran pcmo at sub 5k intervals. But 5k is a good conservative interval.

Thank you for the responses. Napa has it on sale for 25 a jug. I've read good things about it so I figure I'll give it a shot.

Napa offers this price on vpbe monthly I believe. I’ve purchased it for my truck in the past. Just keep a look out, each month, for the period when they have the discount. You could prob run longer than 5k being that many of the diesel guys run this for 10-12-15k oci’s (use dependent of course). I posted a uoa of this oil not long ago and there are several voa’s floating around if I recall correctly.

Unfortunately my Chevy is a 2002 and only tells me when it needs to be changed, doesn't tell me percentage. Is it still easy on the engine with a 4.10 rear cruising at 70-75? I'm genuinely curious about that, it's crossed my mind many times.

There was a member here with an old Focus who pushed his intervals well beyond 10k miles (using HDEO) with acceptable oil analysis results. The Olm in your vehicle was calibrated for a basic, API-certified oil from that era. Obtaining periodic lab results from your sump samples is the only way to know whether you are fully utilizing your lubricant or not.

By the way, what inspired you to come up with such an original user name?

The first username I tried was taken so I tried this one jokingly and it worked. My "change oil" message has never actually come on except once when I forgot to reset it. I don't push my intervals out very far on this vehicle. I may go a bit further with this premium blue though.

I had an '03 Silverado Z71 5.3L. If memory serves, I ran it to around 6500-7500 miles on QS syn.
