i just bought a new to me 4.0, v-6, automatic, ranger, with 8500 miles. i am going to change oil tomorrow and use synpower 5w30 with a motorcraft filter, from now on out. is this a good choice for a synthetic? it was between that and Mobil 1. it has valvoline conventional in it now that was put in 500 miles ago by the ford dealer. i like and have used Mobil 1, but i also like valvoline. i tow a cargo trailer often, and at my age this will probably be my last vehicle. do you all agree with my choice of oil and what about 5000 mile oil change intervals. it never gets short trip use and about 70% highway.

Either Synpower or M1 would be excellent choices, as would Pennzoil Platinum or Quaker State Ultimate Durability, which are a little bit cheaper. You could easily go well over 5000 miles with any of these, but while under warranty stick to the OCI recommended in your owners manual.

Synpower and MC filter would be a great choice..
Dumping a conventional fill with only 500 miles on it and using a Full Synthetic for 5,000 mile OCIs on a vehicle that sees mostly highway miles seems a bit much to me. What does the manual recommend for OCI or does it have an OLM? At the very least, run the oil for the full spec'd OCI/OLM.

I would suggest that you go with 10W30 Valvoline SynPower!

Sounds like a good plan... If you tow a cargo trailer often I like the idea of changing at 5,000 instead of the 7,500 called for in the manual (especially if you are in a hilly part of Missouri). Motorcraft filters are good quality and Valvoline is good oil (as are Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, and Quaker State Ultimate Durability that are mentioned above). 5w30 would be good all year round in Missouri.
You have made up your mind. However notice the add pack is the same for the most part across the board with this oil. Starting with dino then blend then Synpower what gives??/
Valvoline is very good oil for 7.5k OCI and MC filter is OEM.
If you have a Napa near you, you might want to consider Napa Synthetic. Its made by Ashland, who makes Valvoline, and according to PQIA, its essentially the same stuff. Last summer, Napa had their Syn on sale for 3.49/qt. Quite a bargain.

I've tried Synpower,Valvoline conventional,and M1 in my gf's 4.0 V6 Mustang,and Synpower and Valvoline conventional ran much smoother and quieter than M1. My vote would actually be Valvoline conventional for that engine. M1 was really noisy in it.
I Never had any luck with oils using the newer lubrizol Na+ packs. Better Luck with old tech overbased Ca+ BoMo.
Please leave in the Valvoline conventional if the oil looks near clean; absolutely crazy to drain fresh SN oil for NO reason. The Valvoline conventional SN GF5 is near synthetic performance. And that Synpower isnt a "real" long drain synthetic grIV/V base.

Seems like they have come up with a very flexible add pack, all there oils produce good results. Ashland/Valvoline have its own chemists and test facility and im sure there has been mass quantities of testing done.

Synpower is a good choice. For longer oci I would trust Mobil 1. If under warranty, stick with what the manual said. FYI, I have a buddy with a 2010 Ford super duty V10. He runs Valvoline conventional and tows a fifth wheel. No problems.
