I bought some Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic (5-30 weight) because of the rebate. The quart bottles indicate an SL rating. Is this correct, or is it possible the bottles are older, I thought it might be an SM oil.

Was going to uses Mobil 1 5-30 (extended w/more SS), but it seems like this oil is getting some positive reviews, for free, I will give it a shot. Good or bad idea?

I have used this oil with good results. The Sl rating on the bottle is correct. Just old stock. It runs on the thick side of 30wt but heavy with moly.

sufstar is right. The SM rating is not in the circle where it normally is but is beside it in text. Maybe the did not time to have to logo updated bfore production.

But I did not see the API starburst symbol that states: Certified for Gasoline Engines

No starburst b/c it doesn't meet the MPG requirements for Energy Conserving. The Maxlife Syn is a "thick" 30wt.

There can be old stock SL out there for sure, and I wonder if there's much of any difference in the oil. The spec sheets are from 9/04 on valvolines website, so it could just be new bottle labeling with no formula change?

sorry for the typo: surfstat

Thanks for the info. Was wondering why it was not api energy saving. I bought the 5w30 full synthetic for (4.55x5) $22.75 rebate.

I have two questions. My '99 F-150 has low miles for it's age. It will have around 40k when I change it this summer. Do u think it will be ok to run the Maxlife 5w30 synthetic?. I use Havoline 5w30 synthetic in it now.

also I am sure any difference in mpg will be nill even though it is not energy saving.

thanks for the replies. I did take a look again at the bottles, and I now see where the SM rating is not the circle, but it is listed along with the others in the text.

Sorry if I am changing the subject, but speaking of energy conserving oils, my current oil is GC gold which I used after the ARX cycle last fall. I am nearing 5k on the GC, and want to dump it early in case there is any residual stuff the ARX cleaned but was not completely removed from the initial rinse. The GC did quiet down the motor and it seemd a little smoother, definately "felt" like it was better than the previous dino oils. The car runs great, the oil level stayed right on, no make up oil at all (always has been this way). But my wife has been complaining about filling up the tank more often, so I am wondering if there is some truth or benefit to the "energy conserving" designation. I did see the Maxlife Syn 5-/30 is not as thick as GC and am wondering if there might be a difference in mpg. For what it is worth, the motor is a vq35de in a Pathfinder, about 64k on the odometer. Bought it new, and used dino oil at the dealer every 3-4k for the first 56k miles.

A few months back I bought some 5W30 Maxlife syn when AutoZone was selling it off at $2.00 a quart (unadvertised special). I drained the last of it about a week ago and replaced it with Mobil 1 5W30.

I noticed two things. It runs better on Mobil 1 (my guess from the slightly thinner viscosity) and drips on my driveway are slightly bigger.
