So I'm sitting at my desk yesterday.
My buddy calls me up. He has a '97 Hyundai Elantra with the 1.8 liter that car got in that year. It's around 135K. His drive to work is 20 easy freeway miles in very light traffic. He's a cook, so he drives to work when most of us are working, and gets off when most of us are about ready for bed.
He's buying motor oil. He either leaks or burns about one quart every 3000 miles, and he's been running 10,000 mile intervals on conventional for the last few years.
He discusses the various oils in front of him, and how he's thinking Valvoline Maxlife High Mileage might be the right choice for him. He is considering it because he thinks it may help with his leaking/burning condition.
Normally I'd tell someone running 10K intervals to go for a synthetic oil, but he just won't go for that. He's dirt poor and I'm thinking $3/qt is his absolute limit.
I figured that at the $2.30/qt price point at Auto Zone, Valvoline Maxlife High Mileage 10W30 (SL) is probably as good a choice as any, since it has nice high levels of the various additives and if I remember correctly, a viscosity on the high end of its grade. Good for a car that specs 10W40 year round, when I can't persuade the owner to buy the 10W40 because it's not on sale.
So, pros, was the reccomendation sound?
I know that 10W40 would probably be a better choice for him, and I also realize that if I'd been able to convince him to pay slightly more I could have gotten him into one of the "fake synthetics" like the Wal-Mart Supertech synthetic or Shell Rotella T 5W40.
In any case, I've got a 4 year supply of Lube Control in my garage, so I'm thinking of giving him enough to keep the Valvoline doped up for its entire 10K.
I'm also pondering giving him a Schaeffer's UOA kit when he changes this out and finding out how this oil holds up. I'll bet that due to his easy drive, it does just fine, with or without LC.

Tom

I would steer-clear of any oil recommendation for him. It's just a matter of time before his engine starts feeling the ill-effects of his wrongful, very extended dino OCIs.

I would not want the oil I recommended to him to be inside that engine when those ill-effects start showing their ugly face. He may blame you for his in-the-future, newfound engine troubles.

And usually twice a year Pep Boys has Maxlife under $2 a quart. He can get 10w40 there, but I don't recall seeing the 10w40 5 qt jugs at Walmart, only the 10w30.

He can get Chevron Supreme on sale at Kragen/Schucks etc for .49 cents a quart(with rebate). Then he could do 5k oil changes and still save money over the Maxlife. Plus his true OCI is about (assuming he adds a quart at 3k, 6k, and 9k) 6250 miles.

Hyundai Recommends 7,500 miles for light duty driving. I would recommend doing 2 doses of Auto-RX and using Maxlife.. change oil and HYUNDAI filter every 7,500 miles.

I doubt his engine will die from an oil related issue even with 10,000 OCI on dino, he probably hasn't done anything with the cooling system and that is his downfall.

Good point. The effective oil miles are much lower. Your stated 6250 assuming about a 4 quart sump.

Islandvic: I'll definitely turn him on to that fact.

Triple_Se7en: The point about not helping friends or family lest they blame you is a good point. However, this guy is too laid back for that to happen. Ever. With anyone else I know, though, I'd follow that theory.

Winston: Awesome logic with the oil change calculation. Thank you. I considered that with the Spacebears study, never considered it for my friend.

Korean_redneck: Good input.

Buick92: Extremely good point. I'll remind him about changing out his green stuff at regular intervals. Does Hyundai use anything exotic there?

I agree with the cooling system as being more of an issue in the long run, along with his tranny/clutch if that fluid's never been changed.

Otherwise, I'd recommend Rotella 5w-40 for longer OCI intervals, or a 10w-40 of his choice. Those Hyundai's like thicker oil, or at least mine did - course one was an '85, liked thicker oil from straight off the lot, and the other was an '87.
