This run was with the new Valvoline Maxlife NextGen 5w30 SN/GF-5 oil.

Vehicle = 2001 Buick Regal with 3800 series II engine, no blower.
Previous Oil = Valvoline Maxlife Red Bottle SM/GF-4

I pulled a sample at 5K, based on this UOA I am thinking of leaving it in the sump till 7K or 7.5K. What do you think of that plan?

I also noticed a difference between the VIS numbers reported by Blackstone in the VOA and what Valvoline published on their website.

Blackstone comments indicated this could be a 7.5K to 8K oil in this engine.

I included the VOA numbers for comparison to the UOA in the code block.

MLG = MaxLife Green bottle (Nextgen)

Code:

Note1: Valvoline states the Vis as 11.6 on their website, Blackstone calibration error?

Note2: I did not have the TBN done with the VOA, this number is from Valvoline's website.

Note3: Could this be higher than the VOA due to the previous oil used, Maxlife Red SM/GF-4?

Enjoy

I would like to see what it looks like at 7500 miles.

Given the two different test used for TBN a rough guess would have put Virgin TBN at roughly 7.5 to 8.0 using Blackstone. So you are likely a little under 50% of TBN remaining.

Blackstone says you can go to 1.0 TBN and while it certainly is okay on occasion as a general rule I try to aim for around 30%. This leaves some room for error if the weather or driving conditions are a little tougher that OCI.

What are the universal averages for this engine? I ask because copper and lead numbers are a little higher than I would want to see.

a former BITOG founder likes this stuff too. I wish he was here. The guy knows his stuff. listen to the audio at the link from NPR.

I would have no problem using re-refined used oil since its just as good as the stuff dug outta the ground.

Once all other oil companies start doing the same thing (which they will since everyone is going green) and a good synthetic comes out, i'll jump on-board.

Wow a slightly better UOA from Synpower to Nextgen. No more than 30% of that moly could have been left over from the previous UOA, so NextGen Maxlife has a good bit of moly in it. I would say it is a very good oil.

i havent even really payed attention... how is this stuff priced compared to regular conventional valvoline? you'd think it would have to be either equal or less. i know theres no way i'd pay a penny more for something used (ok, rerefined, or however you wanna word it) when i could get brand new for cheaper..

MSRP is the same (Assuming you are talking regular VNG vs VWB). My Walmart has the VWB slightly cheaper right now.. Also their are some rebates you can get on VNG.

Actually used motor oil makes a better feed stock. Have you ever seen the yellow sulfur laden stuff that passes for crude these days?

All the metals were at or below the universal averages for this engine.
