Using upsized filter

I'm getting ready to change the oil on my 2006 G35 coupe. I'm currently using Mobil 1 Extended Performance filters. Mobil specifies to use the M108 filter but a lot of people with the VQ engine are using the larger M110 filter.

My question is wether using a larger filter poses any risk to the engine or can I safely use an upsized filter?

As long as the bypass rating is the same, and the drain back if needed functions as intended, you shouldn't have any problems. Of course consider ground clearance too depending on application.

Agreed with PolarisX. As long as those requirements are met, I only see benefits to running an upsized filter. You get (mildly) increased oil capacity, more filter media, and less restriction to flow due to the increased surface area.

I used oversized oil filter in my previous LS400 for more than 300k miles without any problem. With extra debris holding capacity I used low end to mid price oil filter for up to 18-20k miles. The engine never had any work under the valve cover, when I sold the car 3-4 months ago it had original valve cover gasket.

a dealer would like to void your warranty also if you use
a bigger filter and have engine issues. so keep an old [censored] dirty filter

Something to think about if you use or are thinking of using an oversize oil filter...the oil filter warranty. This is copied from a oil filter website:

THIS LIMITED WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER misapplication, mis-installation and damages or failure caused by rust or corrosion.

THIS LIMITED WARRANTY IS VOID under the following circumstances:

• Use of motor oil other than the viscosity and type as recommended in the ownerʼs vehicle manual;
• Damage or failure caused by misuse, negligence, modification, accidents or abuse;
• Damage or failure caused by unauthorized service or use of unauthorized parts; and
• Filters which are submitted in a condition that prohibits testing to validate any alleged defect or malfunction.

So, if you use a oil filter not listed as being the correct filter, you might not have warranty coverage if the filter is defective. The chances of having a defective brand name oil filter that cause engine damage are slim, but I'm sure they do happen.

Any reliable auto parts house that sells you a filter will take it back without question if it splits or breaks at the lip roll. Good filters fail very seldom. In 60 odd years of working on motors, I have never had a filter failure. I guess it could happen, but it could as easily happen with a stock fitment unit ...

The increase in media area is a real benefit. So is the slight increase in volume.

So try it and see what you think ...

I expect to see no measurable improvement or advantage in using a larger filter than the OEM.

No problems using oversized filters, just make sure the oil level is good

I would say to stick with the OEM sized filter. The G35 calls for pretty short oil change intervals. Unless you plan on going longer than recommended, I don't see the benefit of an oversized filter.

I imagine an oversized filter will cause slightly more wear on a dry start (like right after an oil change). Of course, you could get around this by pre-filling the oil filter with some oil, but that would get messy with how the filter is oriented on the VQ35 engine.

I have to agree. Depending on your OCI it wouldn't do much except add some extra oil to the total amount in circulation.

This seems more like a feel good thing to me, could go either way.

More oil is good. More filter area is good (less restriction). Cost is often the same...

So let's flip this on it's head. Is there any provable disadvantage to using a larger filter?

Takes longer to build oil pressure on a dry start, or if the ADBV fails/tears.

Can read my answer in that thread, but in short, run the M1 110. When it comes the spec shorty 6607/14612 and Nissan/Infiniti, many run the longer 7317/14610/57356 or equivalent M1 110 size filter.

My mower uses a larger filter than the M1-108. Without question I'd be using the larger filter, if there's room of course. You could use the Fram Ultra XG7317 also.

Well there are no dry starts on a broken in engine. There is an established oil film everywhere.

I don't know about ADBV failing. I use WIX/NApa Gold or Donaldson filters and have never had an ADBV fail in 50 odd years... All my motors come right up. I run oversized filters everywhere they will fit, which is about 89% of what I own. Most will start building pressure while cranking on the starter

The outboard and one tractor do not have room, so they get stock sized filters.

I have had one ADBV go bad on a Purolator once that was given to me. But it was bad from the get go ...

My Ford Ranger complains bitterly for about 3 seconds on startup post oil and filter change if I don't fill the filter with oil. I want the ADBV to work well. Normally builds oil pressure quickly.

Use a filter that does not tear...Most everyone here knows which filters tear.
